Raw install, KDE 2012.08
« on: November 13, 2012, 02:01:07 PM »
Starting a new thread.  I have downloaded a new copy of PCLOS KDE 2012.08.  Immediately on rebooting after removing the install disk got the following errors:
1. We are sorry, KDE Daemon closed unexpectedly. Details: Executable: kdeinit PID: 3701 Signals Aborted (6)
2. We are sorry, KMix closed unexpectedly. Details: Executable kdeinit4 PIS 3823 Signals Aborted (6). this one
allowed me to retry, and I did, without any further notification, so I don't know if it did or did not.

Opened Synaptic, reloaded, told it to upgrade, let it, rebooted. Add Firefox and Thunderbird to desktop.
Made the panel a little higher, but not so as to double the number of widgets on the right.

Tried to add widgets to the panel, but could not. Unlocked the widgets, raised the runner of widgets, and tried to add
the log-out widget and the remider to get milk widget. Tried alt-d, trid left clicking the widget, tried right clicking the widget--no luck.  there are no extra widgets on the panel.

Changed desktop wallpaper to image from sdb. Have not yet added NVidia driver from Synaptic, or any printers.

I an trying to take this one step at a time, after having muchos problemos with the last attempt at this.

Please advise.  --doug

First problem after those mentioned above:
Rebooted the machine after setting desired "wallpaper." Rebooted.  Came up with the bright gray screen with the
(gray) Japanese flag things on it.  So, IAW the last set of instructions from Just17, went to System Admin>Startup and Shutdown.>Session Management, set it for "restore previous session."  It still comes up with the gray screen after
fresh restart. Rechecked the settings in System Admin and still says "restore previous session."

I will stop at this point and ask for help.  this is not going any better than last time.

Second reply: Question:  must I move the :wallpaper: picture to a directory on sda, and if so, which directory?

I'm not in my KDE machine but I think the folder for wallpapers is:
/home/you/.kde4/share/wallpapers
Could be:
/home/you/.kde4/wallpapers

Just use "show hidden" in the file browser since .kde4 is a hidden folder. You don't need to be root.

BTW  sdb is not mounted by default

Pictures for your desktop wallpaper can be anywhere as long as it is accessible.

on the "raised runner of widgets",click and widget you want to add and dont release the click, now drag the widget you want to add to the panel,if a slot to add the widget does not open up immediately, drag around the widget along the panel and sooner or later,a slot to add the widget will open up,drop the widget to the slot to add it.

You need to set it to "start with an empty session" unless you deliberately want to have your previous session restored which is not usual.

Your wallpaper must be accessible during boot else the default will be used.

If it is on a different partition to one of the OS partitions then you need to ensure THAT partition is automatically mounted.
Else copy the file to an OS partition so it is available.

The wallpaper file is copied to:
[doug@localhost ~]$ locate no_bull_background.png
/home/doug/.kde4/share/apps/RecentDocuments/no_bull_background.png.desktop
but it doesn't help.

I have pclos on my laptop with everything working. It started as a much earlier version, and was updated
until fairly recently.  It runs kernel 2.6.38.8bfs. I have a big flash drive. Can I somehow copy that whole system
to this machine? (It is on different extended partitions.) If so, how?  I am willing to live without the extra memory
that .bfs implies.

no_bull_background.png.desktop??

That is not an image but an access.

Copy the picture/image to the picture folder in "Home".  Then "right" click on the desktop> Folder View Settings.  Be sure wallpaper is set to "Image".  Click on"add folder".  It may say "add file".  Browse to the picture/image highlight it double click it and it should appear in the box.  Be sure it is highlighted there and then click on apply>save.  If my directions are not exact they should give you an idea for how to do it.  I have mine set to slideshow and it works fine.  Hope this helps.

Well that's what locate said.  I go to the directory and it doesn't show up.
[doug@localhost ~]$ cd /home/doug/.kde4/share/apps/RecentDocuments
[doug@localhost RecentDocuments]$ ls -la
total 8
drwx------  2 doug doug 4096 Nov 13 19:18 ./
drwxr-xr-x 22 doug doug 4096 Nov 13 16:30 ../
[doug@localhost RecentDocuments]$

There has got to be a way for me to get a version of pclos back on this machine. I could hook a protable drive to the laptop and try and install the system onto the protable drive, and then copy it here.  Not sure if that would work--the laptop is a 32-bit cpu, this is a 64-bit.

Or please tell me what I must do.  However, I WILL have my selected "wallpaper."

If you are doing a new install of PCLinuxOS and you are using the whole drive with no other O/S installed.  I have found using default install option and all the default answers to question asked.  Doing that never caused me any problems.  Even when dual booting.

According to synaptic, I have teamviewer7 installed.  I don't see anything called teamweaver.
If that's what you need, just let me know what you want me to do, and I'll do it.
