Unable to correct dependencies
« on: November 13, 2012, 06:56:07 AM »
I realized that it has been a long time since I saw an upgrade in Synaptic, so I decided to investigate at this forum.  I saw the news about kde4, and Old POlack's post on the KDE 4.8.3 Upgrade.

I changed my repository to ftp.heanet.ie/pub/pclinuxos/apt and removed the 4 from kde4 in Section(s).  I am trying to follow "Normal upgrade with manual cleanup," and I did reload -  mark all upgrades -- apply - apply.  I wrote down the names of the removed programs.

When I click apply, I get the message "fix broken packages first."  When I click Edit - fix broken packages, I get two messages about pkgProblemResolver and then "Unable to correct dependencies."

I am now unsure about what to do next.

Thank you,

Jan

First you should identify those broken packages and let us know.
If you press "Custom" in the main window (lower left) you can see which packages are marked as broken.

I did this and nothing is listed as broken.

Open a terminal and type "apt-get update" and then "apt-get dist-upgrade" as root (su). Post the output here.

I have seen other threads on this subject ......  you should be able to find the best procedure from one of those.

Searching the forum - use the main search option and not the text box - and look for  "fix broken packages first."

You are still using KDE 4.6.5. In the meantime there were two upgrades, one to 4.8.3 and the last one to 4.9.2.
I don't know if it would be possible to update your system in its current state. I believe it should be wiser to perform a new installation with the current 2012.08 KDE iso (with KDE 4.8.3) and then upgrade to KDE 4.9.2.

You could try removing broken packages first. But removing kdelibs4 will also remove the whole KDE 4.6.5 desktop.
Then you must immediately (without logout/login) install at least these packages: kdelibs, kde-workspace, kde-runtime, kdm, kde-baseapps-dolphin, kwrite and konsole.
This will give you a basic kde desktop and then you can use synaptic to proceed with the rest.

Again, I'm not sure how this will go and I strongly suggest to do a new installation.

How did this happen?  What did I do to contribute to the problem?  I have reinstalled in the past, and it took me over a month to get everything working again, including some old legacy Windows programs running under Wine.

Unfortunately, you answer your own question in the first post; it has been a long time since you upgraded, and two new releases have occurred.  It is recommended that you update once a month at least.

Maybe you were using an outdated mirror? This system has not been updated at least since August 15 when KDE 4.8.3 was announced.

It has been discussed many times in this forum that PCLinuxOS is a rolling release and to keep it rolling the way it should, you should update it at least every 2 weeks. The lack of updates for so long should have alarmed you much earlier (I get worried when 3 or 4 days pass without updates sometimes :)).

The first thing you should have done when you realized that there are no updates for many days was to consult the PCLinuxOS Synaptic File/Software Mirror Status Report and check if the mirror you are using is working and updated. If you have done that early enough you could have used another mirror and catch up with the updates.

Also, always keep an eye on the forum and especially on the PCLinuxOS General News and Announcements thread (you can subscribe to it and have an e-mail to your inbox when something important is announced).

I would like to thank all those members who have posted responses to my inquiry about updating Synaptic.  I have decided that enough is enough.  I just purchased a full version Windows 8 and I will install it in place of PCLinuxOS when it arrives.  I may post a message about why I did  this in the Sandbox, but a posting here would be inappropriate.  I wish the best of luck to the PCLinuxOS community, and I appreciate the help that I have received over the years.
