Unlike many, I loved C-rations ... well all but one. The nickname of which can not be used on this forum.
I wouldn't necessarily say I loved them but C-Rats were not half bad. Ham and Mofo's ThirdOfSix ? the worst I remember. Was quite fond of beef and rocks myself, not to mention real fruit with juice, not that freeze dried crap. Trioxane bars worked great. Good luck heating a MRE with out that stupid pouch.
Personally I always liked SOS myself

and have been known to make it myself from time to time

Yes, I was talking about ham and lima beans.
It was not so much that I really loved the c-rations, it is just that the alternative was pretty bad. The mess hall food at that particular unit was not good at all. Those of us who worked at night when the mess hall was not open ate c-rations instead. It was really a step up from the food and the sour reconstituted milk in that mess hall.
I really did love the pound cake with peaches over it though.
Actually, SOS is one of my all time favorite foods. My Mom fixed it a lot when we were growing up. This was probably due to my Dad being in the Navy during WWII.
The only problem with SOS is that there are many different versions of it so you never know which version someone is talking about. During different time frames, the recipe changed and was even different in different branches of the military.
Officially, it is or was known as chipped beef on toast. It was basically a white sauce with chipped beef or hamburger or sausage or whatever was handy.
