The "Earworm" Thread
« on: November 11, 2012, 11:25:52 PM »
An "Earworm" is any tune or song that you get stuck in your head and can't stop playing over and over.

Usually when I get an "Earworm" it only last for about 6 hours but sometimes I get something stuck in my head for more than a day or two.  >:(

It gets old for sure.

Have you had an "Earworm" lately?

Post a link to it if you can find one.

It just might help you get rid of it. ;)

Your brain doesn't seem to care.

I think the natural state of a healthy brain is, by default, trying to learn everything it can. An "earworm" is at its core, a healthy brain trying to learn something.

Adding additional connections (like that clip) makes the brain even more curious.

I suspect that one of the brain's "involuntary reactions" to stimuli is to repeat the stimulus over and over until it has burned synaptic pathways sufficient enough to repeat the pattern at will.  (this is just a stupid theory of mine) ;)

There are no connections between what we find pleasing, and what the brain finds that it must create synaptic pathways for.

Hit me in my knee and my leg jerks. I still don't like it. LOL  ;)

Interesting facts on Wikipedia:

Quote
According to research by James Kellaris, 98% of individuals experience earworms. Women and men experience the phenomenon equally often, but earworms tend to last longer for women and irritate them more.[10] Kellaris produced statistics suggesting that songs with lyrics may account for 73.7% of earworms, whereas instrumental music may cause only 7.7%.[11]

In a 2006 book by Daniel Levitin entitled, This Is Your Brain on Music: The Science of a Human Obsession, he states that research has shown musicians and people with obsessive–compulsive disorder (OCD) are more likely to suffer from earworm attacks. An attack usually involves a small portion of a song equal to or less than the capacity of one's auditory short-term memory. Levitin reports that capacity as usually 15 to 30 seconds. Simple tunes are more likely to get stuck than complex pieces of music. He also mentions that in some situations, OCD medications have been known to minimize the effects.[4] In 2010, published data in the British Journal of Psychology directly addressed the subject, and its results support earlier claims that earworms are usually 15 to 30 seconds in length.[12]

If you are wondering what the original music is this is it.

G/f claims I am OCD, so that would explain why there is so much trapped in this thick skull of mine.  If I could empty the noise out of my head, maybe I would sleep better at night.
