Old-Polack
Thanks for sharing your wakeup call. May you be very successful changing your life style, we will just have to start working harder for ourselves when you are doing a few laps around the block and chopping a bit of wood. The diet that is a hard one when you like cooking but good luck cutting back.

When I retired from work some years ago it took me some time to realise that I no longer needed same food intake to keep my weight.  I am still struggling to get down only a few more pounds to what I believe would be a good weight  for my body frame. I have great luck in that my wife is very knowledgeable in healthy diet preparations. I consider myself very fortunate in that respect. If I was cooking I would be living very differently.

As I have been weened off Forum a bit in the last months and worked harder outside I also used this as an excuse to eat, "just a little bit more", result no change in weight.  :)  However one of my daugthers and her partner are coming from Belgium for 5 weeks with 2 grand children, two boys 4 and six years of age.  Rumors preceeding their imminent arrival indicates "hope we know what to expect" as they are full steam on.  That may help shedding a pound or two keeping up with them.

Good luck  8)

o-p, you suffered what i suffered some years ago - stasis.  i'd been cracking a game (cheating) for 12 hours straight (after a long day's computing) and my feet and legs swelled such that walking was difficult.  by fortuitous serendipity, i worked with a bunch of medics, one of whom explained what happened, why and how to stop it happening again.  one method is to rise every hour and walk around for ten minutes or so, lifting the knees high - just emulate the ministry of silly walks.

the method i found easiest (laziest) is to have the keyboard on a long string, likewise the mouse, and put my feet up on a stool.  i have to rise every couple of hours to fetch replenishment and empty out, so i do get a wee bit exercise.

glad you're in better shape.  you might like to try alan sugar's food intake reduction method - use a small fork.

Good to see you back.  Old Friend!!  I too need to get up and walk,or at least do something.  But since I am also lazy most of time all I do, is put my feet up.  Again good to see you back.

you might like to try alan sugar's food intake reduction method - use a small fork.

I don't know about the small fork, but a trick that does seem to work is to buy some smaller than dinner sized party plates. When they "look right" portion wise, they only have about half sized portions. When done eating what's there, don't go back for seconds.  ;D

My party plates are 8" and 8.5" dia. as opposed to my 10.75" and 11.5" regular dinner plates.  ;)

A "Portion" has been dictated to us buy the food industry.

Proper "portions" of food are surprisingly small.

Food, as is turns out, was once our biggest challenge and we evolved to make the best of what we had. (Kill a deer,, eat the whole thing)

The whole thing was stored in our cells as FAT. And that was a good thing.. back then. When was the next deer going to be killed?

Today, we have plenty, and our bodies are still doing what they did in the past to survive.. (store it in the form of FAT.)

Modern day humans have no need to store fat for survival because we eat what we want every day.

Tiny amounts of food are required for an over all healthy diet.

I cook with one philosophy,

  Quality over quantity.    ;)

You know you have reached the pinacle of laziness when a side plate or even a saucer is sufficient to hold the whole meal.
Seems you have a bit to go yet  :D

Glad to see you are not seriously discommoded  ;)

"A "Portion" has been dictated to us buy the food industry.

after i did my diet, i find hard to eat some foods like a burger, fries and a coke is more than the double i can eat and it will surely make me go to the bathroom very fast!

i feel full of drinking a glass of water or drinking half glass of milk and eat a slice of bread

it seems that most times you feel hungry you want to drink something, or at least it is what is happening to me and i'm not diabetic

So happy to see you are back, O-P, savior out of many of my computer problems.  I had that kind of an ankle-and-foot swelling a couple of years ago. Dr. didn't know what was wrong until I read the fine print on some B.P. medication I took. I changed the medication and within weeks the swelling disappeared. Dr. had no clue. Go figure!

Welcome back!

As you probably know I like alcoholic beverages.... a lot  :)  I can't drink (doctor's orders) for a few more weeks but the last 10 years I had been drinking one (sometimes two) glasses a day. Same with the dessert, just a small portion. I'd cut all carbonated beverages and just drink a cup of coffee a day... sometimes. If I want a chicharron made from pork I eat it... once a month and about 70 to 100 gr.

µT6 is right, those of us who tend to accumulate kilos usually interpret thirst as hunger, a glass of water may help us to identify and avoid eating when is not necessary. Ask your doctor, maybe to eat small portions 5 or 6 times a day will help you to lose weight, if you only reduce your food intake your brain may interpret as a shortage of food in the environment, lower the metabolism and begin to store whatever it can for the "bad times" that won't happen if you eat more times a day.
I shall pass this way but once;
any good therefore that I can do,
or any kindness that I can show
let me not defer nor neglect it,
for I shall not pass this way again.

you've been peeking! ;D

a pal of mine has been given the dubious diagnosis of 'pre-diabetic'.  that's a bit like being 'pre-dead'.  it's served to make him paranoid about his blood sugar levels, which vary, as they will, from low to high throughout the day and according to dietary input.  the only purpose that has served is to wind him up and render him garrulous on the subject.

the simple trick to limiting food intake is to stop the moment one feels satisfied.

as you say, rudge, quality over quantity.
