SOLVED Dupeclean not doing its job
« on: November 10, 2012, 02:39:11 PM »
I have the newest version of FullMonty on my VAIO laptop and ran into an interruption during updating with synaptic. After restarting the system I hoped to complete the update but was confronted with the message of numerous duplicates on the system. I tried to repair the rpm database as per Texstar's instructions. When I get to the dupeclean part of the sequence, it shows the long list of duplicates.  But after I finish up with "auto-clean" a long list with the message that there are multiple versions of .......    on my system and nothing has been removed.

I then went to start cleaning Synaptic by hand - uninstalling the older versions like AndrzejL had suggested in one of the magazine copies. Before I finish this gigantic mindless job: is there another way or clue as to why I can't use dupeclean?

Thanks

Sorry, I don't even have dupeclean installed but it seems to me that your topic title is correct.  In such a case I would use some option other than 'auto-clean'.  FWIW I would be inclined to use Synaptic if possible rather than dupeclean because Synaptic is as reliable as software gets and also because some of the duplicates may not be properly installed.

Install and run dupeclean-gui.

auto-clean is an apt-get option.

I am sorry to say that dupeclean-gui did the same job as dupeclean on the console. It reported all the packages it had removed (including some I had already removed by hand), but going back to synaptic I still had a list of duplicates. I saw a place where
rubentje1991 had suggested a "Delete option" for rsync - -  might that be the problem?

If there are no further possibilities, I just slug on

edit:Well, I solved the problem for my machine by going manual all the way. I do have a clean synaptic now. Alas, google-earth does not work any more - but no more broken and more duplicate packages.
Thanks again,
