Anyone else having issues with Compiz in guest installs?
« on: November 10, 2012, 12:45:22 PM »
I have been running PCLOS XFCE in Virtualbox in Windows 7 for months now, since I prefer to do browsing in Linux even if I am booted into Windows at the time.

A couple days ago Virtualbox updated and put out new guest additions, so like usual I updated and installed the guest additions.  Now Compiz is nonfunctional, and generates a blank screen at start-up.  If I use drak3D and disable desktop effects then the install still runs, but my theme is gone - windows have no borders, and the placement is automatically in the top right of the screen.

To see if maybe just this VM got corrupted I did a fresh install of LXDE in Virtualbox, which ran fine until I installed and enabled Compiz, and then the same behavior occurred.

I'm hoping that a new update will fix this, and in the meantime I am thinking of trying a KDE minime install to see if Kwin is affected similarly.

Anyone else seeing this, or is it a quirk of my hardware?

Just a thought, have you added the latest/compatible  VirtualBox Extension Pack
PCLinuxOS 32bit KDE 4.10.1; kernel-3.4.11-pclos1.bfs & 64bit 3.2.18bfs; NVidia GeForce 8400GS 1GB 310.19 driver

Sony Vaio SVE1513A4ESI Laptop, Intel Core i5, 2.6GHz, 6GB RAM, 750GB, 15.6" Intel HD Graphics 4000

This is apparently a Compiz problem and it has been noted in the virtualbox forum:

https://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=52215

for me it only happens to the guests that have Compez enabled. The others work fine.
The workaround that worked for me is to drop VirtualBox back to 4.2.0 and reinstall guest additions and then upgrade to 4.2.2 or 4.2.4 and don't upgrade the guest additions in the Compiz guests.
I have PCLinuxOS with the latest updates for the host
VirtualBox x86 4.2.4
the guests are
PCLinuxOS LXDE   -this works 4.2.4 guest additions no Compiz
PCLinuxOS  2012 - this works 4.2.0 guest additions Compiz
PCLinuxOS  minime 2012.08 -this works 4.2.0 guest additions Compiz
slackware 14.0                     -this works 4.2.4 guest additions no Compiz
Windows XP                         -this works 4.2.4 guest additions
Windows 8                           -this works 4.2.4 guest additions

To follow up jfxg it is NEVER recommended to do anything outside standard video rendering inside a VM. I am surprised Compiz worked at all.

Compiz had been working fine for months and months, over the course of several updates to Virtualbox.  It was just this last update that broke it.

Try upping the video memory for the guest.  To something around 64mb (if VB lets you - depends on the video card).

It's been maxed out the whole time - at 128MB.  It's this last Vbox update that broke it.
