Half broken!

I am still using 6.2.2.6613 on this desktop machine because I am not prepared to risk updating any packages. On the laptop, I have re-installed LXDE from my backup DVD via MyLiveCD. It has an earlier GE but it works. GE 7 proved to be a non-starter there (literally).

I sure hope that an answer will be found to this problem with GE.

Now, how often have I read such comments? Many times and they become more and more, no surprise...  ::)

Google provides only MS-Windows compiled products for the Linux desktop, which must be run via wine. GoogleEarth version 4.x worked fine this way but with any newer version GE has become more crash happy. I'm afraid that the next GE version 8 will only run on maybe 10% of all hardware, which is pretty appalling but Google does not care about the Linux users. I'm at the point to suggest dumping all Google products like GE, Picasa, etc. in particular on 64bit where Google provides only 32bit MS-Windows versions...  ::) These products just pull in lots of Windows libraries, and do not even work reliably. There are many alternatives for Picasa, or GE, i.e. one can use GoogleMaps in any browser.

Me too have that problem. Google Earth 7 don't works good  :-\ on every my PCLinuxOS 32-bit installations (LXDE, XFCE and ZEN-mini) on four different hardwares (four different PCs): it starts, but it appearance is terrible (no seas, no colors, nothing)... To resolve, I had to uninstall Google Earth 7 and (after) re-install Google earth 6 (using the rpm that Serj [Thank you very much, Serj!  :) ] posted here). Thank you, guy!  :)

It seems to me reasonable to have two versions of Google Earth in the repository, as suggested agmg.

Is there already a decision on this suggestion ???

There are some issues on this google-earth_i386.rpm (still available and is version 6.2.2.6613) with
Quote
$ sha1sum google-earth_i386.rpm
c328cfa6ba93be295ec05745124af75628d09ccd  google-earth_i386.rpm

Add manual KMenu entry with
Quote
Name: Google Earth
Command: google-earth %f
Icon: see System Icons > Applications > google-earth or Other Icons > Browse to /opt/google-earth/product_logo_256.png

or /usr/share/applications/google-earth.desktop wih
Code: [Select]
[Desktop Entry]
Version=1.0
Name=Google Earth
GenericName=3D planet viewer
Comment=Explore, search and discover the planet
Exec=/opt/google/earth/free/google-earth %f
Terminal=false
MultipleArgs=false
Icon=google-earth
Type=Application
Categories=Application;Network
MimeType=application/vnd.google-earth.kml+xml;application/vnd.google-earth.kmz;application/earthviewer;application/keyhole

And I can not select "Force version.. " this one in Synaptic (is greyed out).
