The GUI runs ontop of a program called X.
What you are seeing usually happens when X starts but a desktop environment,KDE in your case, failed to start.

A broken KDE installation from a broken update is probably a cause.

On one of the terminals, type "synaptic" and start up synaptic and then search for and reinstall "task-kde-minimal" or a package that sounds like that, i cant remember its exact name at the moment.

Also installed login screen manager which was missing. Final issues regarding the fact that glassified theme does not work are minor.

i've just had the same problem on my Vaio laptop.  Will try this as well.  Will check the correct syntax in Synaptic from my base computer before trying it on the laptop.

Have a great evening!  :)

It seems the syntax includes "kde4" instead of "kde".  i tried that and got dependency problems, so, as a last resort (i was already downloading 2012-08 on my big box), i tried Reload, Mark All, Apply and got about another 10 Meg. of updates - very strange.  i wonder why Synaptic hadn't pulled them down the first time.

That, however seemed to fix the problem.

Have a great morning!  :)
