SSD drives
« on: November 09, 2012, 12:45:03 AM »
Bought a Kingston 240-gig SSD sata3 drive about a week ago.

Granted my MSI-163k laptop only has sata2, but the speed increase is quite noticeable!

It's like I bought a newer computer.  Hope these SSD drives are a good thing by now.

I got a 60GB recently for a build .....  SATA III .....  and had it connected to SATA II for a while before I realised it.
I noticed no speed difference when I connected it to SATA III.

I had an 8 sec boot to LXDE desktop after initial install on SATA II connection.
It has slowed a little since ...  more services etc loading.

I am unsure what the defaults are for mounting an SSD but if they do not include 'discard; you should add that option to the mount entry in fstab for SSD partitions.

from what i have read, the model you got should be as good as a normal hard disk, perfectly good for 5 years

a great upgrade, how fast does it boot?

it doesn't matter much that it only has a sata II, that sata goes up to 3 gbps, that translates to speeds around 300 mbs per second reading and writing(depends on the ssd)

Not much has been said about this but GSmartControl  and
HDSentinel are in Synaptic.   Most manufacturers accept
that info if warranty problems ever arise.   hdparm gives good
speed tests.

Haven't heard many bad stories of problems with SSD's just that
they run cooler, use less power, etc..

gsmartcontrol tells me nothing ......  seems not to recognise any of the HDDs in this PC.

I don't know how to launch hdsentinel  :(

Code: [Select]
gsmartcontrol

Reports an unknown drive here, also (but it runs).  Guess what?  I'm running as regular user!

Code: [Select]
gsmartcontrol-root
or
Code: [Select]
su -c gsmartcontrol

both work as expected (the drive is identified correctly).

SMART technology is supposed to be on newer hard drives.   HDSentinel
needs capital letters and root.    I'll post some output after the movie I'm watching.

Have a good one.

For that Kingston ssd 240-gig, I paid 194.00 plus taxes.  There was a Intel ssd 240-gig for 220.00.  Also I could get in a 240-gig ssd (forgot the brand name) for 280.00 with awesome specs.

But the guy said that seeing my laptop was only sata2, the Kingston would be more than what the laptop could handle.

I have a 128-gig Samsung ssd drive in my tower, as my 1st of 3 harddrives.  When win7pro boots up, I don't even see the pretty blue welcome screen.
