help checking configuration on new sata DVD Drive
« on: November 08, 2012, 10:40:15 PM »
from pcc I find:

Identification
Vendor: ‎Optiarc

Description: ‎DVD RW AD-7280S

Disk identifier: ‎Optiarc DVD RW AD-7280S

Media class: ‎cdrom

Bus identification
Target id number: ‎0

Connection
Bus: ‎SCSI

Channel: ‎0

Logical unit number: ‎0

Target id number: ‎0

Device
Old device file: ‎/dev/sr1

Misc
Drive capacity: ‎burner DVD

Disk controller: ‎3

Module: ‎ata_piix

From the terminal using
$ wodim --devices
wodim: Overview of accessible drives (2 found) :
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
 0  dev='/dev/sg1'      rwrw-- : 'ATAPI' 'iHAS224   B'
 1  dev='/dev/sg3'      rwrw-- : 'Optiarc' 'DVD RW AD-7280S'
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

The 2nd one above is the problem drive

$ wodim --scanbus
scsibus0:
        0,0,0     0) *
        0,1,0     1) 'ATAPI   ' 'iHAS224   B     ' 'GL0B' Removable CD-ROM
        0,2,0     2) *
        0,3,0     3) *
        0,4,0     4) *
        0,5,0     5) *
        0,6,0     6) *
        0,7,0     7) *
scsibus3:
        3,0,0   300) 'Optiarc ' 'DVD RW AD-7280S ' '1.01' Removable CD-ROM
        3,1,0   301) *
        3,2,0   302) *
        3,3,0   303) *
        3,4,0   304) *
        3,5,0   305) *
        3,6,0   306) *
        3,7,0   307) *

The 2nd one above is the problem drive

eject /dev/sr1
works

With CD or DVD in the drive it sees it and brings up the device menu but when selecting any of the choices they see no disc in the drive.

I don't know what else to check.

I wonder about the permissions .....  you might use K3b - Settings - Set up System Permissions and make both fully accessible to all users ........  I don't know, but it might help.

both are
/dev/sr0 670 root.cdrom
/dev/sr1 670 root.cdrom

presently

I haven't tried to record anything yet. All I have tried to do is play a movie DVD and a music CD.

I have two new drives one seems to be working and the other not. The one that seems to be working is a lightscribe.

So, what happened when you ran the K3b setting setup?

I didn't yet. K3b would change them to
/dev/sr0 666 root.cdrom
/dev/sr1 666 root.cdrom

would that be better?

Changed the settings but no change on the drive working with a movie DVD or an audio CD in it. The other drive seems to be working fine.

So what is the output of
wodim --devices
now, and has it changed any?

Does the device with media inserted show in Dolphin's Places menu?
If you click on it what happens? ......  does it display the contents?

The results appear to be exactly the same.

$ wodim --devices
wodim: Overview of accessible drives (2 found) :
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
 0  dev='/dev/sg1'      rwrw-- : 'ATAPI' 'iHAS224   B'
 1  dev='/dev/sg3'      rwrw-- : 'Optiarc' 'DVD RW AD-7280S'
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Yes the CD contents is listed in Dolphin

I see some difference here ^ dunno why ......  maybe someone else could comment ... maybe a reboot?

Well at least you know the drive is functioning and the contents of the media are available to you.

If it is a video you can try from a terminal

mplayer   /dev/sr1

and it should play.

It might be that there is a link needed from sr1 to /dev/dvd or such to allow the auto-detection to function correctly.

Maybe .....add to /etc/rc.d/rc.local .....

ln -s /dev/sr1 /dev/dvd > /dev/null 2>&1
ln -s /dev/sr1 /dev/cdrom > /dev/null 2>&1

I don't use optical drives much these days so have not retained any really useful info  :(

Those results are the same before changing the settings from K3b and after the change and before and after a reboot.

No not on that drive no video or audio app will play I think. I will explain.

KsCD sees the contents and displays it and has the scrolling marque thing but there is no actual sign of it playing and there is no sound

Dragon player starts I point it to the drive and it does nothing.

smplayer the same way.

Tell me about the link you were talking about. Maybe the other drive is blocking it some how. They are both sata and the other one is a lightscribe. Right now I guessing about it because I just don't what else to check or try.

Maybe .....add to /etc/rc.d/rc.local .....

ln -s /dev/sr1 /dev/dvd > /dev/null 2>&1
ln -s /dev/sr1 /dev/cdrom > /dev/null 2>&1

This was in there for sr0 so I added the two lines for sr1 under the two lines for sr0

Going to reboot to see if it works. Adding lines and trying without reboot doesn't work.

Edit: reboot didn't work either
