TV-out on Dell Latitude D810
« on: November 07, 2012, 10:06:11 AM »
I have a Dell Latitude D810 recently retired from business use.  I would like to be able to use the TV-out (s-video) to connect it to a TV.  When I connect it to the TV and turn it on, I see a flicker on the TV screen, but that's as far as I get.

The laptop has a fresh, updated install of LXDE.  It has an ATI Radeon Mobility X600 video card.  It shows it is using the Radeon X1950 and earlier driver.

Anyone have any ideas on how I might get this to work?

the tv out on rca or s-video on many video cards doesn't work if it is not using the amd or nvidia driver

in your case with that ati x600, you are not using it, this card was abandoned around 2006 by ati

to enable vga and s-video or rca connector you need to use the vesa driver

this driver is alot less than the x1950 and earlier you are using, no 3D acceleration support and graphics will work slow

is it a old tv? or a new hdtv?  it is better to use vga connector on those situations

when i wanted to use the dual connection(vga and rca), i used to duaboot windows xp but resolution over rca is a problem, hard to read anything at 800x600

not sure if in your case(with that particular card) you could try a trick, disconnect the vga, connect the rca and turn on the pc, see how far it goes on linux, if not, then dualboot is simpler in this case

remember to disconnect the rca cable when booting into linux if my previous trick doesn't work, some cards tendo to disable both outputs when rca is connected but driver doesn't support it

Thanks guys.  I'll try some of this out and post the results.  Unfortunately, it's an older TV with no VGA input, so I'll give the other ideas a go.

I'm not having any luck with this.  I don't guess I'll waste anymore time on it.  Thanks again for the suggestions.

did you tried my suggestions?

if that is the case just dualboot when you need the rca connection or time to change to a new tv with vga

I don't want to install XP if I can help it.  I'm going to explore some other options for getting Internet content on the TV.  It's not a big deal, though.  I can watch it on a PC if necessary.

if you want to see internet content, then that tv won't have much sense, not the solution you need

there is some devices that can be connected to your tv and show content form local devices or internet content but lately i haven't seen any that has a rca input but i supose this one should do it

i found this list of possible devices too

http://www.labnol.org/internet/watch-internet-videos-on-tv/12177/

there was a converter, it takes vga connector and converts it to rca signal, i haven't used one in linux, and honestly haven't seen one in 10 years but i know you can find one in stores

this is a example of the device

this one is better quality, the previous one has lots of bad replies and users say that doesn't work
