[Solved] New KDE installation- Can't Play DVD or Youtube videos
« on: September 06, 2012, 01:20:43 PM »
Sorry to be a bother lately- but new KDE desktop installation needs a bit of tweaking [hopefully this is the last for awhile].

I am not able to watch DVDs, Youtube videos, or online video content-- all of which I was able to do previously.  Not sure if it was just since a failed attempt to do the recent update, or if it had been longer than that.

Inserting a DVD, the machine responds with 8 choices, I select VLC.  The screen shows the <Play><Forward><Backward>, etc., buttons.  Pushing <Play> and I get a brief flash and it just sits there.  Doing it again, I get the same.

Youtube:  I select a video to watch and rather than the viewing area turning black- it turns white, but no <Play> button--- just sits there.  [Online videos content is the same-- nothing].

Your help would be appreciated,
katie

libdvdnav4
libdvdread3
libdvdread4
libdvdread-utils
flash-player-plugin
kde4-config-flash
mplayerplugin

Of what use be there for joy, if not for the sharing thereof?

Your flash player version? If it's 11.2.202.236-1pclos2012 try 11.1.102.63-1pclos2012 or disable hardware acceleration - Adobe Flash Player Settings / Display

also verify that you are using x1950 and earlier video card driver for that ati radeon 9200 you have

have you enabled any desktop effects in kde?

have you enabled any desktop effects in kde?--- fresh install, so have not enabled any-- where would I check to see if it was done by the installer??

Currently 11.2.202.236-  pclos2012
Are you saying I should uninstall that and install 11.1.102.63-1 pclos2012 ?  I can do that, but just wanted to be sure that was what you were saying

thanks for responding

Try first to disable hardware acceleration [11.2.202...]. If it doesn't help unistall 11.2.202... and install 11.1.102..

I keep looking and looking-- but finally have to admit that I have no idea of where to disable hardware acceleration??

if you haven' tried to enable desktop effects you probably have them disabled, that video card is not really supported anymore(x1950 supports only parts of it, very basic 3d) and to enable some effects you have to do it by hand, i know this because my desktop pc has that video card

to disable hardware acceleration on flash open a youtube video, when the video is playing right click/configuration and in the first tab uncheck hardware acceleration, close the web browser to apply this change

Unfortunately, since I was unable to play a Youtube video-- I was never able to get to right click on it [tried many, many times-- but still the blank space-- right clicking on the blank space brought only a menu related to blank screen space, no configuration option.

In the end, I uninstalled the 11.2.202... and installed 11.1.102
The good news is that now DVDs, Youtube, and online videos all work as expected.....  Thanks to the help of each of you.

I will mark this thread as [Solved]-- however, did have a question; Synaptic mentioned additional vulnerability with this older version-- is it likely that a new version will be made available, or is this just a dead-end for this hardware?
Thanks for all your help

i have that hardware and i have latest flash plugin without the problems

in general that hardware is on the deadline since 2010 or 2009 but i think that the problem in your case is the hardware acceleration on the plugin, i ignore where is stored the configs for that plugin

don't forget to disable the option on this plugin too unless videos are working well on your pc windowed and fullscreen

I wonder what makes the difference??  As it sure doesn't work on mine with newer plugin-- but I am glad the older version works for me for now

don't forget to disable the option on this plugin too unless videos are working well on your pc windowed and fullscreen
I tried both ways and don't notice any difference-- I will keep an eye on it

Again, thanks to all who have helped in this process-- glad to have PCLinuxOS back working again.

"I tried both ways and don't notice any difference-- I will keep an eye on it"

the difference is noticeable when you have enabled the desktop effects, i have a couple and under some pages i need to have disabled the hardware acceleration, youtube crashes or i can't use flash
