Won't save screen resolution!
« on: November 05, 2012, 04:17:09 AM »
I am running FullMonty. Being that I am a senior citizen a screen resolution of 1024x768 is just perfect for my needs. When I go into the desktop configuration application and change it, set it as my new default and then save it it, it works just fine.
However, when I boot back into Linux ( I have a dual boot system with Windows 8 ) it goes back into the same higher default resolution that obviously is the standard. Maybe you young fellows don't mind but the print is harder to read, etc. I sure would like it to stay at what I set it to be.

I must be doing something wrong. Could you help me, please?

Thanks!

Try specifying the desired resolution in PCC ("Configure Your Computer") under Hardware => Configure graphics card. Then reboot.

Since this is the system-wide resolution setting, it should make the new resolution stick.

Thank you Tschommer. Worked like a charm.

Also thank you Agmg. I'll keep your suggestion in mind. Is there a convenient way to search for a particular topic, or do I need to navigate the whole gamut of messages?

Regarding your problem I just searched for "screen resolution" and set the search results order to "most recent first".
Of course, watching the forums almost daily, I had in mind that a similar problem was discussed a few days ago, so my search was a bit easier.
I guess you can't avoid going through the results to find the answer you need (if there is one) and that is why we should always use subjects as descriptive as possible and mark threads as solved, so as to help those who will search for similar problems in the future...

If I sounded like a bad guy, I'm sorry, that wasn't my intention at all. :)

There was another thread on the subject ......  for best results the native resolution of the monitor should be used, and the fonts made larger to be easier read.

This gives the sharpest picture and less eye strain .....  everything working at its optimum resolution.

I agree with Just17.

And so do I. On a flat screen display anything but its native resolution will give you a more or less blurred picture. If your fonts and graphics are too small -- make them larger, but not by changing the resolution. Start by changing the DPI of the fonts in System Settings.

If you still have a CRT display, ignore the above.

I'll join the chorus.  Your hardware can give you stunning graphics and sharper text at higher resolutions, and it's easy to adjust font sizes from the KDE controls.  There's even a checkbox to allow adjusting all the system fonts at once.

Thank you, everyone. I shall certainly try using the higher resolution and adjusting the font sizes, etc.

Have a good week, and weren't the election results great? I was a little concerned for a while, especially after the first debate. Let's hope he delivers......

Sorry, I let my enthusiasm overwhelm my judgement. I agree with you in principal.
Thanks again for your help and feedback.
