Cheese and wine.  I offer some wine as well to all my friends. Some cheese too.

And lets raise a glass to never getting the kind of email from jaydot that omnio is about to get.  :D

I think Scoundrel and Jaydot have the right answer.  I can't see what the big deal is.  Instead for getting upset just don't answer the post.  I remember when I first started looking at linux.  I knew nothing about linux.  I had trouble with using search, still do.  Get so many answers it is hard to find a correct answer.  I need to get better at searching.  But the thing is right away at other forums I got the RTFM or a smart a** reply.  I came here and found a friendly bunch of people willing to help me out.  That was back in 2006.  They and other like them are still here.  They are still answering some of my dumb questions.  I remember once starting one question with "sorry for the dumb question".  In the reply he said "there are no dumb questions".  I am sure I will ask dumb questions in the future.  I guess what I am trying to say is, " if the question upsets you don't answer".
To me the great thing about this forum is the "friendly people and the willingness to help".  I hope that never changes.

perhaps the cheese while you get to home, something of interest here?

Lots!!

Looks really good but... what's a good cheese without a cup of wine?  ;D

BTW I'm at home and just enjoyed an excellent cheese (no wine) elaborated with goat milk, people make it in little farms at north of my hometown and the prices are really low for that quality. Next time I will ask my wife to prepare the goat cheese with olive oil and herbs, is delicious.

How? I don't know, I only eat  ;D  but the cheese goes in cubes covered with extra-virgin olive oil, garlic and fine herbs; you have to leave them a few days in the refrigerator.

I do not post often and really try to search before posting a question.  But some times I do not know what to search for and have been using PCLinuxOS since .92. Now a new person has a problem and dose not have any idea of what they need to search for.  Maybe if the subject is a common one the person needs help to identify what to search for.  NOT RTFM!!!!!!!! As was stated earlier in the thread (Jalbindi's post) a list of problems with links to threads with possible answers would be great as a support page.

Earlier tonight I had to search for a command line to use in a terminal.  All I could remember was a long time ago you could type in a command and change your video mode when you messed up the video card drivers and were dropped to a command line.  Now search that one if you are new to Linux.      :o   This is the BEST community I have ever been a part of.  I understand that for the old timers it gets a little old answering the same question over and over and over.  But may I suggest that not only is their a search function but insert hyperlink and copy and paste works also to gently point to an old answer or repeat a good solution in a new thread.   A frustrated user who is told to search is a frustrated user who will search.  Search for a new operating system that is.  :'(

It's not so bad. I think deep down you agree with most of what has been said. ;) It was fun at least. LOL

Now I have a similar memory capacity - I call it fuzzy memory (there was an ad for a BPL washing machine with fuzzy logic some years back).
So I have written and been improving this page slowly http://www.pclinuxoshelp.com/index.php/Helpful_CLI_commands_in_situations.

As mentioned earlier, the Knowledge Base could be a good solution for these situations. Experienced users could just post a link to an appropriate page, and let the user take it from there.

There are 2 sections HowTo and Errors and Solutions which if improved will reduce a lot burden for those who help and lead to more fishing by the seeker ;)
But right now our wiki is sparse and crying for contributions.
Packaging well will cure headaches of many :) But learning to package will cause headaches in many :(

I think what sling-shot posted is very pertinent, but this is a very small Forum and volunteers are hard to find as there's a limited amount of advanced users, it seems.

About the degree of Help, and the Degree of let them find out for themselves situation: All I can say is each situation is different.
If the information is available, and current, + searchable in the contex of the Version of PCLinuxOS we are using, it should simply be told to the "New Comer" that such info is available, in a kind manner.

If as a helper you feel you're spending too much time holding someone's hand, you should say so.

A 'Reasonable' attitude should be normal, otherwise no point having a Forum. That's how I've felt using most open Forums over the years. If it's unhelpful, you put it down to being an inferior Forum, and leave.
As this is the support Forum for PCLinuxOS, that's what reasonable people come here for, whether it be Searching, or asking a question.

There are of course idiots who like to ask silly questions.

As I understand information about PCLOS is specific to this Forum. No use going to other Distro Forums to ask for help.
The Programs used in PCLinucOS, installed by the user; have if you're lucky a help manual, or a Forum, if you run into problems. If not seems reasonable to post for help, being an open Forum.

Polite notice to all users **PCLinuxOS Usage Rules ** Please Read  (Read 7568 times)
With there being a sticky thread, and introduction here, it might be a good idea that when someone joins the forum they are first directed to that post, and agree to use the Forum as specified.

I can't remember what the TOS are, but if there is a problem with "New Comers" maybe the 'Agreement' that the user ticks when registering should be ammended with points that are causing Moderators problems.
