<SOLVED SORT OF>MiniMe in VirtualBox
« on: November 04, 2012, 02:57:44 PM »
I have had no luck installing MiniMe in VirtualBox. I have tried on 2 computers. One computer it won't work at all. The other it loads to the desktop for a minute or two then the screen goes black and the network icon that usually resides in the task bar tray moves to the upper left hand screen corner. Nothing else is available to try when that happens. No right click works. Clicking on the upper task bar produces nothing. There is no taskbar on the bottom.
It is kind of frustrating. I wanted to load MiniMe so I can tweak it the way I want , then make a disk and load it all updated and tweaked to another computer. I understand, that this is not an unreasonable thing to want to do.

I had posted this in MiniMe board but no one was able to help. I thought maybe the issue was better suited to this board.

Thank you in advance to anyone who can help.

It seems KDE needs more than 512MB RAM assigned in Virtual Box, I'd put 800 something because I just have 2 GB and I was able to install and use KDE Mini and Full, if you have enough memory 1GB should be just right.

That was a good reminder about why this family choose to use LXDE for work related things, it is running with 512 MB but you can go lower if you need it.

KDE is only in my home desktop.

One of the computers I used has 4GB. That one was worse than the one with 1.25 GB.

It is really getting aggravating. I probably will have to give this up and just install MiniMe and do the tweaks then.

Joechimp didn't you assigned more RAM in Virtual Box?  that solved the problem for me

New - name etc. next - Memory Size (I think, my VB is in Spanish) put the bar at 1 MB

Yes, I did assign more ram before I delved into it and that is the state that it failed. Not sure what the problem is. The fact that it is happening on 2 different computers initially made me think that I was at fault but now I am not so sure.

Installing MiniMe right now, assigned 877MB RAM, 8MB video, I took all the defaults except RAM; I don't understand what's happening with your install.

I have to ask: do you have Virtual Box 4.2.2 Non-OSE ? is the last one in repos and is what I'm using

I do not. I downloaded Virtual Box from the repo's so whatever was there was what I got.

4.1.4

Is that my problem? Where do I get the version you mentioned ?

I don't know about the differences (some extra proprietary stuff I think), I'm only establishing what I'm using to eliminate variables.

I use the script  getvirtualbox (in repos) which download the Non OSE version

I will do that and see what happens. Thank you very much.

Well, I found it and downloaded it and did all the things I was supposed to do.
Nothing again. I thought sure that must be the problem but it wasn't.
It gets to the splash screen with the progress bar and just stops.
Thanks anyway.

Well, this is solved sort of. IT is solved in that I have minime working in virtual box. The bad part is I have no clue why.

I did the same thing over and over again. I uninstalled then reinstalled. Over and over again. Finally it just took. It installed clean and I was able to update everything in synaptic and I am good to go. I can add things and tweak until I feel it is ready to copy and install on the regular hard drive.

I really don't like not knowing why something finally works. I don't learn anything from that. I guess I should just be satisfied that it works. I wanted to be able to help someone else who might encounter this problem.

Anyway thank you to those that had suggestions. It is appreciated.

At least you proved Einstein wrong   ;)

I believe that could also be applied to perseverance which is a virtue. Now I'm really confused  ???
