<Answered>Dropbox Question
« on: November 04, 2012, 09:24:06 AM »
I think I may have misunderstood how drop box works. I had a file on my computer I made changes to every day (spreadsheet). I keep it in drop box. I just did a full reinstall and discovered that the file in drop box is almost one month out of date. Is there a way to get Dropbox to automatically save the changed file each time I open and close it or at least once a day?

Just curios since the file has been in Dropbox for a long time why did I loose only a months data. I can't remember doing anything that would have caused Dropbox to save an updated file a month ago.

I suppose you have the Dropbox application installed, right?

You can have it running on startup and monitor your dropbox folder for any changes to the files and automatically sync with the online folder...

Providing you have the local Dropbox application running it should then sync automatically (I haven't used the Dropbox application for quite sometime so it may of changed - I don't install Dropbox any more; I just use web account to  download Archies  rpms)

one month out of date

Is the one month old file  from the Events Section on your Dropbox Web account? as it may have a copy there for you, but that will be dependent on you having  had the local Dropbox account open and running so the 2 way  synchronisation can take place.

I am using the one that comes pre-installed with KDE version of PCLOS. I almost never turn my computer off. What exactly does always running entail. Is just starting your computer enough?

Note when I do start my computer I do always get that message suggesting I need to reinstall. I usually just click through the offered downloads and sign in. Should I be doing something more?

I have a half dozen files in Dropbox, one  of which (my .ics calendar file) gets altered almost daily (at least dismissing alarms) and it is always up to date on all my other devices (Linux, Windows and Android).  As long as Dropbox is set to autostart at boot up, it should synch anytime something changes, and immediately after boot if that device has been off.

You just need to make sure Dropbox is installed and set to autostart on all your devices.

So my question is how do you do that?

When you first run Dropbox local client, you have to login to your account and link this account to the specific computer. A folder called "Dropbox" is then created where you set it and every file you "drop" inside this folder will be synced online. An icon should appear in the notification area. If you right click on it, you can access the preferences:

That is what is puzzling. I have the icon and it says it is syncing and I know I had it before. Guess it is a mystery that will not be solved. Or maybe it is me misremembering my entries. Almost embarrassed enough to delete this whole thread.

Thanks all for the replies.
