kde partition manager
« on: November 04, 2012, 08:36:41 AM »
PCLOS KDE 2012 32 bit updated

It seems that whether I use the menu or the run command to start 'partition manager' it doesn't open right away or sometimes it seems - not  at all.

Today I entered the root password when asked but it was 5 to 10 minutes before it opened. I had opened synaptic and thinking about installing gparted and uninstalling partition manager when suddenly it opened.

Does anyone have any ideas about why this might be happening?
Thanks,
Harold

Maybe I am confused, but in my menu under 'More Applications', 'Configurations' there is an entry called KDE Partition Manager. The description says 'Partition Editor' and the command has 'partitionmanager'. Is this not what it seems to be?

Thanks,

Yes it is a KDE Partition Manager and I use it here.  ;)

I suspect a problem with kdesu/kdesud

Does this always happen?
How about after a reboot?

I have had a similar thing happen every now and again with other apps such as Synaptic ...... so  I launch System Activity window (Ctrl, Esc) and type 'kdesu' into the entry box.

I then kill kdesud .....  it will restart if required ..... and any kdesu entries also.

Then try kpartition-manager again while watching the process window.

Also ensure the entry box for the root password is not being hidden by something else on screen.

Don't think a reboot helps but I will try a reboot right now and post back.

edit after reboot
Rebooted and tried to launch Kde Partition Manager from the menu. I entered the root password and waited but so far while typing this the kde PM has not opened. There is nothing blocking the window.

Hey! KPM did finally opened after 5 minutes or so.
Not sure about log files. Would there be a log file that might shed some light on what was happening during the time before the window opened?

This sounds suspiciously like the 'problem' reported recently with Gparted taking nearly 10 mins to populate its window.

That was due to having a Floppy drive enabled in BIOS although no such drive existed physically.

......  might be worth checking ......

did you have System Activity window up with kdesu in the entry box when doing this?

What showed?

No, I didn't have the System Activity window open at that time. KPM finally opened as noted in second edit.

Rebooted into another distro; did some work and then came back to PCLOS with the kde partition manager problem. Was reading your reply and launched System Activities and typed in 'kdesu' and there was one 'kdesud' item so I ended that process. I will now try to launch partition manager.

Tried to launch KPM and after entering root pw it didn't open. I then started System Activities, typed 'kdesu' and there were 4 entries:
su
kdesud
kdesu-stub
kdesu

The kdesu showed the largest memory usage. 4804K if I read it correctly. Memory shared was 17,000+.

Will let it rest for the night.....

Just after I typed the line above the KPM window opened like everything was normal. Must have been over 5 minutes since I tried to launch KPM.
Thanks,
Harold

Yeah may be.

Here in FullMonty kdesu is crying for (or remembering?) Archie...

I found the string "/home/archie32" in 153 files in /usr/bin and one in /etc/profile.d/kde4env.sh which, for instance, says:
Quote
export QT_PLUGIN_PATH=/home/archie32/.kde4/lib/kde4/plugins/:/usr/lib/kde4/plugins/

I don't know if it's of any importance though.

But when I start KDE partition manager from menu it loads (after 5 minutes) with full privileges.
The command in the menu is partitionmanager too :-\
