SOLVED-Which repositories and apt-get
« on: November 04, 2012, 05:39:34 AM »
I have just installed PCLinuxOS, but wondered which repositories I should enable in Synaptic. With Mint and another distro which I have used in the past, to get a full coverage of available software one had to enable additional repositories, but with PCLinuxOS it would appear that all the repositories not marked by default are just for games.

Are there any essential repositories which I should add.

Also what is the equivalent to the apt-get commands which one uses in terminal to upgrade and install software.

Everything is in one repository, except for Megagames.
All other options are mirrors of the one repository.

Use Synaptic to keep your installation up to date ........  Reload, Mark All Updates and Apply on a regular basis.

Always do as described by Just17, never do partial upgrades as they will ruin your system. PCLinuxOS is a rolling release distro.

All that is is good. PCLinuxOS is.

Also what is the equivalent to the apt-get commands which one uses in terminal to upgrade and install software.

Hitting "Reload" in Synaptic does what "apt-get update" does.  "Mark All Updates" followed by "Apply", and then "Apply" again, is more or less equivalent to "apt-get dist-upgrade". (Never use "apt-get upgrade" in PCLinuxOS unless you want to bork your system.)

Marking one ore several packages for installation and hitting "Apply" and "Apply" is the equivalent of "apt-get install", marking them for re-installation is the equivalent of "apt-get install -reinstall", and so on. The menus give you lots of other options.
