So simple even a cave-man...
« on: November 03, 2012, 08:13:13 AM »
I really hate having to ask such basic questions, but I've had an issue (in Linux) long enough to finally suffer the embarrassment of asking.......

When I hit the PC (Start) button, navigate to "Computer", then select "Run Command", I get a small window at the top of the screen to enter the command I want to run. I type in something. I wait - and wait - and wait - and, well, you get the idea. This #^%$@&$ little box just sits there and glares at me !! I cannot tell if it is blowing me off or actually doing something. Maybe I've done something wrong and it won't even tell me that.

How do I get this "Run Command" to actually DO SOMETHING ???

Specifically, I typed in gparted and hit enter, then F1, then tab, then [ctrl] + enter, then [alt] + enter, then [ctrl]+ [alt] + enter. Then I quit entering and began uttering - and you don't want to know what I uttered !

Oh Gods of Linux... please show me the path to righteousness !!

Is gparted installed on your system? It's not on mine.

Tovian, as long as you don't enter a valid command, the run command window will just sit there.

Just to make sure you can open a terminal (enter konsole in the run command window) and type in gparted. You'll see that, as gandy mentioned, it's not installed ("command not found").

OK, so that's the answer (or at least part of the answer).

Thanks Very Much for the replies. I had already tried gparted from Konsole and, as you noted, it did not work. I was not sure that is the same thing (using the same paths) as running from the "Run Command" even though my gut tells me it is.

So, bottom line... if you enter something in the "Run Command" box/window - and absolutely not a $@#%%^&# thing happens - you may translate this to a "semi-error message" that you have entered an invalid command. (?)

In my case (with Linux) I will concede that what seems like a software problem is almost always a lack of knowledge on my part (operator error). But, this is how we learn.

Thanks, again !!

Hi Tovian,

Stay curious and ask lots of (daft) questions, best way to learn. Obvious things are usually so only after you know the answer.

Gparted is in synaptic as I installed it a few days ago.

I prefer to use konsole to run commands as it gives feedback.

Now why didn't I think of that ?! It worked just fine. Now I know what SHOULD happen.

Hey, chilly... looking at your sig... hard to believe Senna's been gone almost 20 years. Will Vettel do it again this year ? (His starting position tomorrow won't help!)

Replying to this post as an heads up.
you can use the run command but it is not wise because you will not know why nothing has happened when trying to start
,as said you will be better to open  konsole and type in the program you are having difficulty with and the resulting
text in Konsole will tell why it is not working and also gives information for the team to try to resolve the problem.

Hate to acknowledge just how much time has gone by - but - I watched Graham Hill win Monaco in 1969. I was already hooked on F1, and I remain to this day.

I've been to Brands Hatch a few times but never for a F1 race. Also visited Snetterton once.
