I had one of the HP dv6000's that began to have screwy shutdown and reboot problems. Turned out to be the video card dying.  I rejuvenated it once by disassembling the laptop and applying a heat gun to the video card, then replacing the original heat paste soaked fiber with a copper shim.  But that fix only lasted 6 months and when it began again, I sprang for a new lappie, feeling extremely fortunate to have successfully reassembled the unit once.  I'd had the unit for six years and after Googling the unit, considered myself lucky for it to have lasted that long.  Seems that model is rife with spooky hardware problems. The problem began after installing a particularly video intensive game.  Don't know if this applies to you but PCLOS 12 may be more stressful than prior versions.   Since it is a fresh install you should have no critical data at risk but if you do, back it up now.

Maybe it is a software issue. God knows there are plenty of opportunities.  Good luck.

cpufrier,
thanks for your reply. to me it looks more like a problem of software than hardware... (this friends hp was very happy running vista and malware, rootkits and keyloggers... so i  talked him to a conversion to pclinuxos).

and now i'm stuck with this reboot instead of shutdown thing.
is there a way i can see logs of what goes wrong at shut down time?
is there something that can be appended to grub to solve the problem?

ps - i just finished installing pclinuxos 2010 on the same machine and it shuts down as it should...

Have you tried the older kernel? (2.6.38)

agmg,
thanks for your input. i didn't have to install an older kernel...

i did yet another reinstall but this time i started the live dvd in safe mode and proceeded with the installation  the usual way...
created a new user and tested shutdown... it worked.
did the mandatory system update... and shutdow worked.
installed locale and libre office, changed wallpapers and other visual definitions and it kept on working... ;D

i will mark this as solved even if i don't know what made the difference...

Maybe something went wrong the first time? Who knows... Glad you sorted it out :)

i wish it had been that easy... i did several (from scratch, meaning: new partitioning) reinstalls always starting from the "live cd" option...

thanks, again.

Excellent. Glad I was wrong.  It is perplexing to have a fix you can't explain but no nearly so vexing as no fix at all.
