(Solved)After an update wifi does not scan for connections.
« on: October 31, 2012, 07:34:13 AM »
Did an update two days ago and now my wireless will not scan for any connection.  It does auto connect to my router.

When I open the network center and click on my wireless device wlan0 it does not show any connections.

Running PClinuxOS-OpenBox  Bonsai  2011.08  Wifi device is a Broadcom BCM 4318

Is there a log in Synaptic that I can post here to find out which update might have caused this?

Ok I will try that.

How I discovered this is I took my laptop to a friends house and when I tried to connect to his router, the network center was not showing any routers to connect to.

I also ran into this with a friends LXDE who came over for some TLC .. funny thing she had been here before with her lappy and I set it up to connect here.. well I deleted the interface thing and started again and it retained her previous connection here.. guess the connection setup is not with the interface ..

The information about wireless access point and the password to the access point is stored with the interface as well as in "/etc/wpa_supplicant.conf" config file.

The interface configuration file only keeps information about the last wireless network it was configured to while ""/etc/wpa_supplicant.conf" keeps all of them.

Ok I have uninstalled or deleted the wireless using PCC.  Now when trying to install I am presented with use a windows driver or a file.  Since I do not have the b43 module in a file.

I will need to use a wired connection to get the b43 module.

can you check in synaptic history what was updated?

what driver were you using before, if it is updated, it is updated to what driver?

Is there is a known problem with a newer version of a driver that managed some "Broadcom BCM 43XX" cards

After uninstalling the wifi device I did a "modprobe b43" and rebooted now the network connection is showing available connections.

The only module that I have used on this laptop for the wifi is the b43 module for the BCM 4318 device.

Thank you.  Should I mark this thread as "solved"  Or are there any more thoughts you have on this?

Curious, when you right-click the netapplet, click configure network,
click wireless, Does the driver(s) appear in the window there ?

Check if module-init-tool and dkms-minimal are installed too.   May
help getting the modules up and in faster.     Those are in Synaptic.

Then delete, reboot, recreate, connect, the usual routine.

"wpa_supplicant" update is probably the cause of the problem. If the problem is gone then you can mark it as solved, you can always reopen the thread afterwards.

Once the Network & Internet configuration window comes up the only two options are

Wlan0: Wlan0

Wlan0: Use a Windows Driver (With ndiswrapper)

module-init-tools Is already installed.

dkms-minimal  Was not installed, I installed it.

Be sure dkms-minimal is installed from Synaptic and check again.
Should be more driver(s), the correct one, listed then in Bonsai.
