hi there,
weird but thru issuing that command reboots my pc rather than shuts off..
i have kernel-2.6.38.8-pclos3.pae.bfs kernel installed
please assist

You could try reinstalling the
initscripts package.
How runlevels are changed is specified in the directories under
/etc/rc.d. So what does
ls -l /etc/rc.d/rc0.d tell you?
The module handling the actual halting or rebooting is the last one,
S01halt, which is a link to
/etc/rc.d/init.d/halt. It might have become corrupt. To know, we'd have to see what it looks like.
