You could try reinstalling the initscripts package.

How runlevels are changed is specified in the directories under /etc/rc.d. So what does
Code: [Select]
ls -l /etc/rc.d/rc0.d tell you?

The module handling the actual halting or rebooting is the last one, S01halt, which is a link to /etc/rc.d/init.d/halt. It might have become corrupt. To know, we'd have to see what it looks like.

Edited.

Well shutting off via GUI is no problem. It usually works. But using command line is a bit weird.

cjcboy2,

The listing of your /etc/rc.d/rc0.d looks relatively normal, even if it isn't identical to what I've got on my 32 bit system. Many of your links are older than mine. That doesn't mean much though as they are just links. The important thing would be the dates of their targets in /etc/rc.d/init.d. Nevertheless it makes me wonder if you are fully updated.

And I still think reinstalling the initscripts package would be a good idea.

It would also be interesting to compare the contents of your /etc/rc.d/init.d/halt to mine.

"shutdown -r now"

This one reboots normally. Though same thing happens at init 0
