Wifi no longer seeing networks since upgrade
« on: October 29, 2012, 08:28:11 PM »
Greetings.

Yesterday I did my usual weekly upgrade via Synaptic package manager, and all was well for a few hours. Later in the afternoon I changed my wifi's WPA password we share our Internet access with my in-laws in the next house and apparently they were hogging all of the bandwidth, and I wanted to use the Internet so I temporarily took it away from them. :)

Later on I accessed the router's web interface and changed the password back again. When I went to change it in my laptop's wlan0 configuration I wasn't seeing any networks to configure, nor was I able to access the Internet. The "system tray" network icon was red indicating no connection. I took the lappy upstairs where the DSL modem is and hooked it up to my ethernet jack directly, and was able to access the 'net.

This morning I went into control center and deleted all wifi connections (both wlan0 and Broadcom Corporation BCM4311 802.11b/g WLAN) then reinstalled wlan0, pointing it to an XP wifi driver's firmware file (.sys) when it asked for one (which was strange, because I was not configuring ndis wrapper, but that's what it wanted, so whatever.)

After a reboot I was able to connect via wifi again, but it's still not able to scan and see networks. The Broadcom connection always errors out with a "the following components are not installed: wl" message, so it's connecting with wlan0. This lack of listed networks kind of sucks because now I'll never be able to change my wifi connection's settings, i.e. password.

Laptop is a Dell Inspiron 6400 with a Broadcom 4311 wifi card. Router is a D-Link DIR600 Rev. B running  DD-WRT v24-sp2 firmware. Wifi connection is using 802.11 B only, on channel 6. Encryption is WPA Personal. Wifi works, and is browsable (our network SSID is visible in the list of available networks) on my wife's netbook running XP and on my smartphone. Just not visible on PCLOS since yesterday's upgrades. FYI this is what was done during those upgrades:

I am having the same problem.  Since the last update I dont see ANY network.  At home its still working because, I think, the connection worked before.  Since I am traveling I have to rely on WiFi and so right now I am using other Mandrake based or Gnome distros to get online.  With them its working just fine.  But PCL works much better overall, its just the wireless issue.  I have the very same issue on my Netbook.

Laptop is Dell Latitude E6500 with Intel Ultimate N Wifi Link 5300
Netbook is Acer Aspire One with Broadcom 802.11n

Update:  I found put by adding the hotel network manually using the ¨Run Config Tool¨ in PCC, its working now.  But I am still wondering why the Network Center isnt picking up ANY of the surrounding networks.  Is there anything I can do since I am not always know the network name.

an update of "wpa_supplicant" supplicant package is to blame for the problem.

search for that package name on the forum and you will see other people are having the same problem and others have manage to solve theirs.

you can start by restarting the wireless router before trying to set up the connection. This has worked on atleast one person

Why should the router care?

And that's not exactly helpful in a hotel room, cafe or coffee shop.

the solution is not the router,  delete the wireless connection in configure your computer/network and internet

create it again, it should be back to normal then

I have installed Wicd Network Manager and that is showing all the networks around.  Looks like that is a good work around.  Will try that on my Netbook as well.

you should ask T6,thats what he said here: http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,110429.msg942502.html#msg942502

the thread talks about the same problem and it has "solved" in its title though its not clear how the problem was solved.

i restarted router there but not to solve the problem, it was probably what made the problem happen, then the wpa_supplicant change caused the error

Same problem, can't scan for wifi networks, nothing is shown ( I know there is at least 6 networks I should see ), had no problem before.
Is there any way to fix it? is it kde or pclos fault?

Look here for a solution by TerryN

It comes down to:
As root:  rpm -Uvh https://dl.dropbox.com/u/62125185/libdrakx-net-0.87-13_terryn_2012.noarch.rpm

Worked for many, good luck.
