Synaptic Reload Error [Resolved]
« on: October 29, 2012, 07:59:27 AM »
I received the following error when doing a Reload.
I am running 2012.2 KDE updated at least once a week (usually daily) since the original installation on this machine.
Everything was fine until I attempted to run an update this morning.
I tried 4 other repositories and had the same problem.

I have looked through the forum but did not find anyone else reporting this problem in the past 3 days.

Seems more like an internet connection error. It seems strange that you've tried four mirrors and can't access anyone of them.
Is your internet connection working properly?

Have you tried from terminal (as root) to refresh the sources list with "apt-get update"?

My internet connection is fine.  I am posting from the same computer.
I just ran apt-get update as root in a terminal and got the same messages.

Can you access the mirrors in question from your web browser?

i.e. http://ftp.heanet.ie/pub/pclinuxos/apt/pclinuxos/2010/

Maybe your source.list got corrupted?

Can you replace it following Option 2 from the following thread?

I did the sources.list replacement as described in option 2 of the referenced link.
It made no difference.  I still get the same error.

This is also happening on a system running an LXDE desktop.
The desktop system is at my office.
The KDE installation is on my notebook and I get the error both at the office and at home.

Have you tried disabling the "megagames" repository?
Maybe your internet provider's fault? Is the provider the same at home and at the office?
Are you using any DNS servers like OpenDNS? Firewall?

I don't know what else to think of...  :-\

I disabled the megagames repository and got the same errors for heanet.
I do have the same company for an ISP at home and the office, but everything had been fine until this morning.

I am not using any special DNS servers.  Nothing has been changed on either system recently.
All other internet activity is working on both systems.

Agmg, I thank you for your ideas.  If you do think of anything else for me to try I will appreciate it.

Open your file manager in superuser (root) mode. ---
Open /var/cache/apt and delete the files pkgcache.bin and srcpkgcache.bin. Do not delete any other files/folders there.
Next open /var/lib/apt/lists and delete the list files. Do not delete the lock file or any of the folders.

In a terminal ---
su
give root password
apt-get update

I do not know what happened, but I just did another attempt to update my system and the Reload worked.
I did nothing to the system - just turned the computer on, opened synaptic, clicked reload and everything was fine.
I will mark this topic resolved - just don't know how.

Thank you agmg and Neal for offering assistance.

Well done, I guess it was a case of your computer just being a computer!
