[Solved] Gwenview after the KDE-4.8.3 > 4.9.2 update.
« on: October 29, 2012, 03:42:07 AM »
This is just to share the following Gwenview problem (and solution) with everybody.
Starting Gwenview resulted in:
Quote
bash-4.1$ gwenview
QPainter::begin: Paint device returned engine == 0, type: 2
QPainter::setOpacity: Painter not active
QPainter::end: Painter not active, aborted
gwenview(4956) Gwenview::BrowseMainPage::updateSortOrder: !action, this should not happen!
gwenview: symbol lookup error: gwenview: undefined symbol: _ZN8Gwenview15FullScreenTheme16currentThemeNameEv
bash-4.1$

A search in Synaptic showed that kde-graphics-gwenview-4.8.3 was still the installed version.
Trying to update kde-graphics-gwenview gave a dependency problem and  lipkipi was one of them (being still the 4.8.3 version).
After updating libkipi-4.8.3 to 4.9.2 also the kde-graphics-gwenview package was updated to the new 4.9.2 version
And the problem is thereby solved.
I guess libkipi was forgotten in the to-be-updated list in the big KDE-4.8.3 > 4.9.2 update

It seems that there are still some issues here.  I did as you suggested and updated libkipi-4.8.3 to 4.9.2, but this removed digikam, showfoto, and a couple of other things.  I thought I would just re-install them, but now I can't! ???
Get this message when I try to install digikam (after updating libkipi-4.8.3 to 4.9.2 and getting gwenview working):
digikam:
 Depends: kipi-plugins
 Depends: libdigikamcore.so.2
 Depends: libdigikamdatabase.so.2
 Depends: libkface.so.1
 Depends: libkgeomap.so.1
 Depends: libkipiplugins.so.2
 Depends: libkipi.so.8  but it is not installable
 Depends: libkvkontakte.so.1

Anyone any ideas?

Gwenview problems --- and several other problems.....................

Looks to me as if the 4.8.3 lib's were removed and replaced with the 4.9.2 lib's

BEFORE the 4.9.2 UPGRADE is ready --- Just My Opinion

Stick around, you ain't seen nuthin yet !!

How is this solved? Gwenview does not work. I just went and clicked and clicked on it and it did not open. I then went to a directory with jpgs in it and tried to open them with gwenview and nothing happened. I have 7 kde 4.8.3-2pclos2012 that are held back waiting for updates.

Gwenview works here.  The issue must have been solved for the original poster.

kde edu-marble
kde graphics-gwenview
kde graphics-snapshot
kde plasma-addon
libkdcraw
libkexiv2
libkpi

I think it is dependency.

The problem is that there are a few packages that can't be updated unless you update libkipi. But if you update libkipi, digikam will be removed, so if you need digikam you can't update libkipi. Just keep your fingers crossed that the packagers will manage to package a new version of digicam. So far it seems to give them problems. But for all of us who can imagine life without digicam this isn't an issue.

Bald Brick, I updated libkpi and it removed a few programs, but I get to use gwenview, which
I use a lot. Satisfied for now and as you state just keep your fingers crossed that the packagers will manage to package and the fixes will be there.

Well i'm truly screwed at present :

Digikam : won't install due to dependencies
Gwenview : has no plugins and so I can't edit any photo metadata.

I have:

kde-graphics-gwenview  4.9.2-1
libkipi 4.9.2-1

And all this on top of the incompatibility between Gimp generated XMP and all other XMP (looks like a single quote(gimp) vs double quote (linux libraries) issue) where gimp can read both.

Not really. For most people 4.9.2 is much better than 4.8.3. For some people upgrading to 4.9.2 isn't a good idea because it means that they will lose one program that they need and depend on. But for the majority of users that isn't reason enough not to upgrade.

And the problem with digikam will be fixed sooner or later.
