Apparently because kipi-plugins is marked for upgrade, it will not allow me to mark for removal or mark for complete removal. When I try, nothing happens.

When you say "marked for upgrade" do you mean it has the upgrade icon (with the arrow) against it or the upgradeable icon (with the yellow star)?

If the arrow you need to "Unmark" before you can select another option. If the yellow star close Synaptic and try "apt-get -s remove kipi-plugins" and see if that gives more info.

OK, here's the result:

[root@Linux1 Downloads]# apt-get -s remove kipi-plugins
Reading Package Lists... Done
Building Dependency Tree... Done
The following packages will be REMOVED:
   kipi-plugins (1.9.0-1pclos2011)
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 1 removed and 0 not upgraded.
Remv kipi-plugins (1.9.0-2pclos2012 Unknown:Unknown/Unknown)

Altho it says here that 1 was removed, Synaptic still shows the yellow star next to kipi-plugins. I don't see any dependencies listed.  don't know if there should be.

The package has nothing requiring it and I hope apt-get will remove it if the -s option is not supplied. It is safe to remove it as the newer build will be installed if you ever install a package which depends on it.

My only concern is it identified the 2011 build as the package to remove and then simulated removing the 2012 build. I hope that's just a glitch in the way the simulation is written and not an indication of what will happen when you try to remove the package. We shall see. Either way, no harm will be done.

Results:  I did apt-get remove kipi-plugins. Now KSnapshot doesn't crash on "Send to." On the other hand, there is no longer an option to print the image, which is just what I need it to do.
(Otherwise it is useless.)  Looking at the "Help" file, sure enough, it says if you have kipi-plugins installed, you get an option to send the image to print.  In Synaptic, there is no longer an
entry for kipi-plugins, of any vintage--2011 or 2012.  What apt-get removed, it was reported, were 2011 files.  Here's the output:

[root@Linux1 doug]# apt-get remove kipi-plugins
Reading Package Lists... Done
Building Dependency Tree... Done
The following packages will be REMOVED:
   kipi-plugins (1.9.0-1pclos2011)
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 1 removed and 0 not upgraded.
Need to get 0B of archives.
After unpacking 18.7MB disk space will be freed.

Cleaning up / removing
  kipi-plugins-1.9.0-1pclos2011.i586     ############################## [100%]
gtk-update-icon-cache: No theme index file.
Done.

So now that it doesn't crash, and is useless, what does anybody suggest?  Is there an RPM for a kipi-plugins routine that won't cause a crash, and if so, where do I find it?

Thanx to all who are accompanying me on this journey--doug

I see that package (1.9.0-2pclos2012) but any attempt to install it results in

kipi-plugins:
Depends: libkdcraw.so.20  but it is not installable
Depends: libkexiv2.so.10  but it is not installable
 Depends: libkipiplugins.so.1
Depends: libkipi.so.8  but it is not installable

I checked the first one .....  the package   libkdcraw   provides     libkdcraw.so.21  not  "so.20"

Not much point in me checking the others .....

Response to T6: Yes, those problems happened here also.  I saw the recommendation to use heanet.  that repo comes up with various errors and basically says it's not really on line.
I have changed to  ftp.vim.org/ibiblio and it doesn't come up with any errors on reload.  To answer the version question: KDE 4.9.2.  In synaptic, all upgrades are apparently installed.
As far as I can see, now that I have removed kipi-plugins, there is no way for me to get a kipi-plugins package anymore.  It does not show in synaptic anymore, and apt-get can't find it.  Here is
what I have from the command line:
[root@Linux1 doug]# apt-get install -s kipi-plugins
Reading Package Lists... Done
Building Dependency Tree... Done
E: Couldn't find package kipi-plugins

BTW: Under kernel 2.6.38 (on my laptop) there seems to be a different set of repos than there is here under 3.2.18.

What do I try next?   --doug

it is ok to have that kernel, some of us couldn't work with the newer one, problems with laptops mostly, kernel 3.4 should help us but meanwhile 2.6.38 is ok

now, about kipi, i haven't installed it but when i try

kipi-plugins:
Depends: libkdcraw.so.20  but it is not installable
Depends: libkexiv2.so.10  but it is not installable
 Depends: libkipiplugins.so.1
Depends: libkipi.so.8  but it is not installable

so, from what i understand it is a broken package, no?

Do you have   apt-sources-list  Version 1.0.3-1   installed?

If not install it and then select Heanet mirror and reload.

The kipi-plugins packages are there.

Unfortunately they are not installable at present due to the errors posted above  :(

Nevertheless you need to get your repo sorted so you can at least see the packages in Synaptic!

Well, it looks as if we have a broken package, and I'm sorry you still can't print directly from ksnapshot, but at least it doesn't crash, so you can save the snapshot as a file and then open it in another program (eg Gwenview or GIMP) for printing. Not ideal, but progress, and you have a workaround while you're waiting.

The problem has already been reported in Broken Packages for digikam and Kamoso so I presume it's under investigation already.

OK, I have put back heanet, and the kipi-plugins program is there.  I will not try and install it until things work again. Would it be possible for me to get notified when the broken packages are fixed?
