I agree with you.
This method requires the control and understanding.

Hello, dougmack! I hope you are all well.

For myself, I noted that the update via apt-get works more "smart" and "smooth."

If the upgrade as follows:
apt-get update
apt-get upgrade
then you can save important for you packages in the system.

If you want to start with a new installation 2012.08.iso, you can try this method.

Best regards.

Serj.

You should not use

apt-get upgrade

The correct command to use is

apt-get dist-upgrade

There are many posts about this on the forum.

Hello, Just17!

I read this:
http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,63199.0.html

And I read apt-get manual too and understand the difference between upgrade and dist-upgrade.
Thanks for clarifying the official position. :)

What is the difference between apt-get update and apt-get upgrade?

(I'm backwith power and Internet as of a couple hours ago, thanx to some power-line repairmen from Florida!  (I'm on Long Island.) So I'm back to the grindstone with this!
Thanx for the input.

To do the upgrade on the command line, type

Code: [Select]
apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade

apt-get update will update the package list to see what is updatable, apt-get upgrade will install the upgrades. Take care - you should not use apt-get ugrade but always apt-get dist-upgrade.
All that is is good. PCLinuxOS is.

apt-get upgrade will only upgrade packages that are already installed, and possibly only if all their dependencies are already installed. It will not sort out dependency issues by removing or installing other packages. This results in partial upgrading which will break your system. dist-upgrade is essentially what Synaptic uses to work out what is needed to keep everything compatible.

If you want more see what's happening or want to see what's broken.
Use: apt-get -o Debug::pkgProblemResolver=1 dist-upgrade

OK, took the advice of JohnW_57.  There were some errors, but they are apparently not the problem, or they are still not fixed--I don't know.  Here's the output:

apt-get -o Debug::pkgProblemResolver=1 dist-upgrade

(I copied this to Kate and then rebooted the system, to make sure that if it needed a reboot it would have it, tested KSnapshot, getting the same crash. then copied it back, here.)
I guess I have to reinstall. I really hate the thought!  Well, I haven't tried a different repo.  Which one is suggested for north-eastern US? Or, better, for maximum reliability?

Firstly, as apt-get reported a problem, you probably shouldn't have replied Y to the question. However, I don't think you've done much damage on this occasion. Have you got digikam installed? That's a well-known problem with 4.9.2. What does Synaptic want to remove if you try to mark kipi-plugins for removal? (Note I said "try". Don't go  ahead until people here say it's OK.)

Looks like the DigiKam issue is solved by Archie.
Better to wait when it hit the repository!

1. I don't have digicam or any of its bits and pieces installed.

2. In Synaptic, went to kipi-plugins and found it marked for upgrade.  Following up on that, comes a box: "Could not mark all packages for installation or upgrade. The following packages have unresolvable
dependencies.  Make sure that all required repositories are added and enabled in the preferences."  [Don't know how I'm supposed to determine which repositories are required.]
Then: "kipi-plugins  Depends libkdraw.so.20 but it is not installable.  Depends libkexiv2.so.10 but it is not installable."

So I guess I know why things don't work, but not how to fix them.  Now what?

The updates are already on the PASS server, so you have to wait when they hit on the public mirrors.

I didn't say mark for upgrade. We've already established that won't work. I asked what happens when you mark it for removal. Don't actually follow that through (unless it doesn't want to remove anything else), but let us know what you have installed that depends on it.
