For myself, I noted that the update via apt-get works more "smart" and "smooth."

If the upgrade as follows:
apt-get update
apt-get upgrade
then you can save important for you packages in the system.

If you want to start with a new installation 2012.08.iso, you can try this method.

You should not use

apt-get upgrade


The correct command to use is

apt-get dist-upgrade

To do the upgrade on the command line, type

apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade

apt-get update will update the package list to see what is updatable, apt-get upgrade will install the upgrades. Take care - you should not use apt-get ugrade but always apt-get dist-upgrade.

apt-get upgrade will only upgrade packages that are already installed, and possibly only if all their dependencies are already installed. It will not sort out dependency issues by removing or installing other packages. This results in partial upgrading which will break your system. dist-upgrade is essentially what Synaptic uses to work out what is needed to keep everything compatible.

(I copied this to Kate and then rebooted the system, to make sure that if it needed a reboot it would have it, tested KSnapshot, getting the same crash. then copied it back, here.)
I guess I have to reinstall. I really hate the thought!  Well, I haven't tried a different repo.  Which one is suggested for north-eastern US? Or, better, for maximum reliability?

Firstly, as apt-get reported a problem, you probably shouldn't have replied Y to the question. However, I don't think you've done much damage on this occasion. Have you got digikam installed? That's a well-known problem with 4.9.2. What does Synaptic want to remove if you try to mark kipi-plugins for removal? (Note I said "try". Don't go  ahead until people here say it's OK.)

The updates are already on the PASS server, so you have to wait when they hit on the public mirrors.

I didn't say mark for upgrade. We've already established that won't work. I asked what happens when you mark it for removal. Don't actually follow that through (unless it doesn't want to remove anything else), but let us know what you have installed that depends on it.
