go back?
« on: October 28, 2012, 06:52:13 PM »
Is there any way to go back to KDE 4.8? Not only doesn't KSnapshot work, (see earlier post) the little speaker icon is gone, and in the Notifications, you get a message: "The audio playback device default dies not work.
Falling back to default."  The alsa miser GUI doe not work.  KMix works, but who needs such a clumsy thing just to change the volume?

I applied the "fix" to KSnapshot, but it didn't work.  the little speaker icon is back, however.

Next time, remaster your system before updating.  All is working fine here after the update.

I decided it is probably futile to try and go back.  If I did, I would never be ablew to update the system again. No, re KSnapshot:
I refer you to the post "KSnapshot fails after upgrade, to which I have appended moved to-> Go back I expect to continue the
KSnapshot problem on this thread.

Have you actually tried to activate the "Send to" menu in KSnapshot? Here's the crash information:

Application: KSnapshot (ksnapshot), signal: Segmentation fault
[KCrash Handler]
#7  0x0a0a7960 in ?? ()
#8  0x09db0ba8 in ?? ()
Backtrace stopped: previous frame inner to this frame (corrupt stack?)

With great difficulty I tracked down what might be the KDE control center. In it I find a subdirectory, ksnapshot:
doug@Linux1 ksnapshot]$ ls -la
total 240
drwxr-xr-x   2 root root  4096 Oct 28 16:47 ./
drwxr-xr-x 134 root root  4096 Oct 28 16:47 ../
lrwxrwxrwx   1 root root    46 Oct 28 16:47 common -> ../../../../../../usr/share/doc/HTML/en/common/
-rw-r--r--   1 root root  5553 Oct  8 20:22 index.cache.bz2
-rw-r--r--   1 root root 22672 Sep 27 20:38 index.docbook
-rw-r--r--   1 root root 59204 Sep 27 20:38 preview.png
-rw-r--r--   1 root root 41025 Sep 27 20:38 send-to-menu.png
-rw-r--r--   1 root root 94932 Sep 27 20:38 window.png
I don't see anything there I could edit.
If I follow the symbolic link to common, I don't see anything relevent there either.  And there is no man page or --help page for KSnapshot.

Meantime, I tried to find KSnapshot in synaptic, but it's not there--I thought maybe i could reinstall that, but no, it must be part of the kernel?

So at the moment, I'm left without a functioning KSnapshot, a KDE Control Center(?) with nothing I can see to edit, and a system that is far less usable to me.

Just before I went to post this, I got a notice that temor said "Next time, remaster your system before updating.  All is working fine here after the update."
That doesn't help me much now, and I don't know what that means, anyway.  What is "remaster?"

Look on the Forum Home Page. The first help section is entitled "LiveCD, MyliveCD, LiveUSB and Remastering". You will find the answer there.

dougmack,

the KDE control center is "Configure Your Desktop" in the menu.

There is an option to configure shortcuts for applications.

In KSnapshot, did you try to send the screenshot to an E-mail address? If so, did you specify the email application in the settings?

Ksnapshot might be a part of a bigger package, supposedly kde-graphics or similar, try to find it there and reinstall that package after a full update. In SYNAPTIC, use the search function to search in the descriptions also.

Not at a Linux box right now, so my hints are rather vague, sorry for that.

Referring to a post/thread without a link to it is pointless .....  do you expect the reader to go searching for it?

I have tested Ksnapshot here using 'Send To'.

I successfully sent a snapshot to

Searching my ~ folder I found only one file relating to ksnapshot: file:///~/.kde4/share/config/ksnapshotrc

To remaster your system use mylivecd.  Information is available through the terminal with
Code: [Select]
$ mylivecd --help
EDIT: I just found this post which may help.

Nothing has worked.  I would like to do the following, if it is possible, and somebody will tell me how:
1. Save everything in /home/doug/documents
2. Save Thunderbird address list andimportant /i] Mail filters
3. Save everything installed in Wine

4 Put these on a thumb drive or a CD
5. Load a new version of PCLOS from a new Live CD
6. Copy the first 3 items back to the new version.

(This will still cause me a lot of grief, but it seems to be the only solution.

Thanx for trying--doug

you can do that by copy and paste, copy the entire /home/thenameofyouruser

everything is stored there but wine, some of the things installed there might not work again, you would have to reinstall, if it is games you could try search the savegame files of each one inside my documents on .wine or inside the folder of each game

i think you should try to change repos, reload synaptic and apply all updates, also verify what sections on synaptic are selected

the errors you mention still sound like a partial update that can be fixed with synaptic

if you decide to reinstall be sure to do it form the latest iso and then update to 4.9, then copy everything back to the hard disk to restore your home folder

I would use Midnight Commander to copy the folders directly to (a) usb stick/s.  I don't know whether you can do that with applications stored in Wine but I suspect that you can, if the stick/s is/are large enough.

I back up my home folder each night using tar.  My home folder is quite small though.  I copy the Firefox and Thunderbird profiles directly to a usb stick.

Thank you for the reply.  Right now I'm in th e aftermath of Sandy, and have no connection to the net.  (I'm at the public library.)
So I will not receive a reply for a few days unless the cable connection comes back to life.) Fortunately I have a generator, and there
was no damage to the house.

Hello, dougmack! I hope you are all well.

For myself, I noted that the update via apt-get works more "smart" and "smooth."

If the upgrade as follows:
apt-get update
apt-get upgrade
then you can save important for you packages in the system.

If you want to start with a new installation 2012.08.iso, you can try this method.

Best regards.

Serj.

we only recommend apt as a last resource

when synaptic fails(in very rare situations) because it can make a bigger mess
