<Solved>Liiveusb video mode??
« on: October 28, 2012, 03:49:13 PM »
ho to all,
I now have a Liveusb stick of my mail system.
I wish to install it on my HP Multimedia Laptop.
It boots but after a timeout/pressing <enter> the system starts the install process.
Unfortunately a very short time after this the screen goes black and nothing appears to happen--even if left overnight.
Now I have problems installing a LiveCD but get round it by selecting Vesa/Failsafe.. can any one suggest a way of setting the video mode as vesa on the Liveusb stick. I have tries removing vga= and replacing it with vesa, no effect still the screen goes black--end of world. I have set vga= to failsafe then setting PCC display mode to correspond to my video card, pressed ctrl-d to continue--but I still get the same problem--black screen.
I installed it on my test box and it works as well as my main box..no problems.
Can anyone help with this? I  could uninstall all 'not require for operating" and create a LiveCD.. but  that seems to defeat the Liveusb system.

Does the CD you boot have Vesa/Failsafe options? I don't remember those.

The CD boot options:
 Video safe mode - FBDEV
and
 Safe boot
both append fbdev to the end of the kernel options.

You can try duplicating that during a LiveUSB boot by:
At the boot menu press F3 (Kernel Options).
Select Default from the list.
Scroll to the end of the options line and add:
fbdev
Then Enter to boot.

That might get you a working system.

If you post the boot entry presently on the USB stick, and also the boot entry from the LiveCD which works for you, we can make suggestions based on the differences.

Maybe the addition of

fbdev

boot code to your menu.lst would work for you?

EDIT:
for some reason I had not seen the previous post from Tom when posting this  :(

Many thanks to you both,
I have managed to get the laptop working again, with all my mail.
Again, many thanks,
