[SOLVED] gparted hangs when scanning devices
« on: October 28, 2012, 09:19:23 AM »
I have a desktop with 2 SCSI hard drives and one SATA.   I just started gparted, entered my root password, and
gparted starts "Scanning all Devices", and it just hangs: it scans forever.   I tried opening a terminal, and providing
and individual drive as an argument as an argument (gparted /dev/sda) and I got the same problem.   I then
tried running gparted on my laptop (just 1 drive) and it worked fine.

Synaptic says PCLOS is using libparted version 2.4-2.   Back on the desktop, I booted up a systemrescue 3.0
CD, which includes libparted version 3.1.    Running from the systemrescue CD, gparted started up and ran
fine for me.

Is anyone else having a problem running gparted?   Should I submit a package request for an updated version
of libgparted?   Any other suggestions?

I sent gparted 0.14.0 to Neal's dropbox. After testing, it should arrive in the repos. I have no idea if it will help with this problem, but it is worth a try.

Curios again.

With everything mounted...

what does "df -T -BM"

look like run from terminal ?

Post legible output then.

Filesystem    Type   1M-blocks      Used Available Use% Mounted on
/dev/sda7     ext4      14595M     5635M     8228M  41% /
/dev/sda6     ext4      97503M    43243M    49378M  47% /DOWNLOAD
/dev/sda8     ext4      19470M     9001M    10469M  47% /home
none         tmpfs       1009M       93M      917M  10% /tmp

I have a lot of other partitions, but these are the only one mounted when
I run gparted.

I posted what I've learned today on the broken-packages thread.

maybe you find a tidbit of info here:

and maybe not .

After full update today -  I found "gparted starts "Scanning all Devices", and it just hangs: it scans forever."
I noticed blkid stalls (disk sleep), but if I kill blkid (requires root password) then gparted loads!

Read this:

http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,110055.msg942609.html#msg942609

and see if it helps.   In short, at least a few of us had floppy drives enabled in our BIOS, but
didn't have a floppy drive.   The older kernel treats this condition than the (more forgiving)
older kernel.

Good luck.

xr200,
Indeed it was the floppy BIOS setting causing the problem.
Many thanks for your help.
