[Solved] Anomalies after upgrade to KDE 4.9.2
« on: October 26, 2012, 12:59:47 PM »
Hi all,

I upgraded my parents' computer to KDE 4.9.2 today and got some anomalies after a subsequent reboot:

1) Autologin has been disabled.

This had not happened with the update from 4.6.5 to 4.8.3.

No issue, enabled it again in PCC. Just wanted to inform.

2) KSplash is gone.

Instead of a splash screen, there's only a black screen after the login screen until the desktop appears.

In system settings, "Horos" is enabled and no PCLOS version is shown in the options. But "Horos" doesn't show, so it seems the system is looking for something but can't find it.

During the upgrade no packages were marked as "will be removed" so I wonder what happened here.

I read here http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,110244.0.html as an advice to reinstall the PCLinuxOS kdm theme but couldn't try yet.

The system is working fine, so no urgency.

My kdm is working perfectly.  The splash after logging isn't the splash specified in desktop settings and shows no icons.

Did you notice that the splash for the login screen and the splash you see while KDE is starting are set in two very different places?

The login splash under Login Screen->Theme (at least if you are using KDM) and the KDE splash under Workspace Appearance->Splash Screen.

Thanks you two.

It's the splash screen after login that doesn't show.

Black screen, no icons fading in, but the two dots revolving around each other until the desktop comes up.

Have checked under Workspace Appearance -> Splash Screen

Maybe because I'm not using the default PCLinuxOS splash screen which I have noticed is gone.

- I can confirm that the Default ksplash is gone.
- Digikam was removed together with kipi-plugins.
- I lost the crystal windows decorations. kde4-style-crystal is installed but it does not show up in Configure Your Desktop > Workspace Appearance and Behaviour > Workspace Appearance > Window Decorations.  Tried re-install and a reboot. No effect.
- The logout / restart etc image is just a black background with two buttons and and some text that is not fully visible. (When temporary moving .kde4 to .kde-48 and starting in a 'default' kde desktop, the logoff image looks as it should'

The update required a two step approach. Here is the history from Synaptic

I'm currently using Archies  "Wet-Air" Splash Screen theme and when the fancy takes me I switch to Mib Ossigeno Ultimate Splash Screen for Kde. Both very nice for me.

I also use MIB Ossigeno Ultimate KDM 4.0 as my KDM login screen along with the MIB Ossigeno Ultimate Icons 4.3  icon theme for my desktop.

Using the 3 Ossigeno themes compliment each other

The Crystal Window Decoration requires the kde-baseapps-devel to install. I'm not sure if it was just my update, but kde-baseapps-devel was not included. Be sure to update kde-baseapps-devel and re-install Crystal Windows Decoration. It will then show in the control settings.

UPDATE : I just noticed the version in the repo for Crystal Window Decoration is outdated. The version for KDE 4.9+ is 2.2.0. The version in the repo is 2.1.1, which is for KDE =/< 4.8. I downloaded the 4.9 version from http://kde-look.org/content/show.php/Crystal?content=75140 and built by hand for now.

During the upgrade no packagings were marked as "will be removed" so I wonder what happened here.

Ditto.

I did not have a KDE splash visible after the update.

Horos was selected in KDE CC.

I selected another theme, and Apply; then immediately re-selected Horos and applied it.

Log out and in gave the Horos splash screen.

I tried installing the metal32 from Archie, but even after a reboot it did not appear in the list of selectable themes ....  so Horos remains  :(

Oops ...  got mixed up with KDM theme and Ksplash it seems.

I did much the same.  I selected another theme which activated the 'Apply' button then re-selected Horos, applied and for good measure re-started the computer.

Was already a known issue when testing 4.9.
Guess it needs a update suggestion  in software board.
