Scribus 1.4 for PCLOS
« on: October 25, 2012, 02:54:30 AM »
Hi All
I have asked this in a previous thread that seems to have died!!

So IS Scribus 1.4 available and if so from where and what are the problems some claim it has with PCLOS?

Thanks a lot

Hmmm. Scribus 1.4.1 has been in Testing since July 8, 2012. Not sure of what its status in Testing is but I've got it installed although I haven't been using it much. But for what I use it for, it works as it ought to.

Thanks Archie!!
Where is it and how do I get it?? I was told to add "testing" to my Repo Address but that made no difference and I can only 'see' 1.3.9 here which is what I'm using and there is a bug in this version I NEED to get past!! It has been fixed in 1.4.

I use Scribus a lot so will be able to really see how it works and am happy to report back if I can just get hold of the thing and test it!!

Thanks again.

Which mirror are you using? Did you click "Reload" after adding "testing" in Sections?

Thanks to both of you!!

I was told to go to Synaptic, select Settings>Repositories and highlight the ticked Repo which is

http://mirror.cpsc.ucalgary.ca/mirror/pclinuxos/pclinuxos/apt/

and under sections it has

main updates nonfree kde games

I added testing to this and reloaded but the Search still only brings up 1.3.9!!

I asked why I needed to use a Games Update for a DTP package and that's when the thread died!!!

I've wrote it in your other thread, I will write it again here: Choose another mirror!

This mirror hasn't synced since August 2011!

Also check this:

for an updated mirror status.

IanW,

if you fully update your system, then you will get an updated version of apt-sources-list. This update will update your current list of repos and remove the Calgary mirror due to its inactivity, see also here.

Then you restart Synaptic, or reload and use a working mirror and proceed as outlined before to install scribus

Apart from that: please do not remove existing sections (such as games, or kde, updates, nonfree, xfce4) from a mirror listed in Synaptic. Such a section may contain a dependency of a package listed in another section, and then that package could not be installed. In general, there is a reason why we have the sections that we have, so "don't fix a working system"

Thanks Guys!!

BUT - I'm afraid I need a little help. I understand the concept but not the procedure. So the Calgary site is not updating and shouldn't be used (I also see mention that the SA site should be removed!!)

So What do I do to determine which is the best site for me to use and how would I implement this? (I guess get the URL and ADD it as a new Repo.)

I did not add what is there now on my system that's what I found after installation (2007 CD - Reload Synaptic lists - Select all Upgrades).

Thanks again.

In the link I provided there are detailed instructions on how to update your sources-list
I think Option 2 should be best for you...

BUT, if you keep using an outdated version of PCLinuxOS and don't keep up with the updates, you will keep facing problems...

@ianw:

Might I recommend the heanet.ie repository? It's a good and fast one.

@ everyone else:

WTH is Scribus 1.4.1 still doing in testing?? The last that I knew, it was agreed that Scribus 1.4.1 would be moved out of testing and into the regular repo. That was months ago. It's installed here and working fine to produce the magazine every month.

Oh ... and the Scribus devs do seem to have deviated from their "schedule" to fix things in 1.5.x. Some of the functions important to those of us who lay out the magazine -- those functions that have been broken ever since 1.3.5 and that weren't "scheduled" to be fixed until 1.5.x -- have been fixed in 1.4.1. Who wudda thunk it, given how they circle the wagons any time you report a problem/issue/bug. Needless to say, I no longer make reports back to the Scribus devs exactly because of their "circle the wagons" responses.

Thanks 'agmg' and the others!! I greatly appreciate the help!!

I have used the "Option Two" as mentioned by 'agmg' and updated my list, refreshed and installed ALL upgrades and also found and installed Scribus 1.4!!!

So I guess I now have "an up-to-date" system and I have the latest DTP package I needed. I have run the new Scribus with my publication and all seems well. The "bug" that I was trying to get past has gone and I can't - so far - find any "funnies"!! will advise if I do so.

VERY MANY thanks to all who assisted - the support is greatly appreciated!!
Now - back to work ;D
