I find a quick way to fix it is to go into Thunderbird - Edit - Preferences - Advanced - General - Advanced Configuration - Config Editor & in the about:config search box type in network.protocol-handler.app.https
Right-click on that, select Modify & then change the value to /usr/bin/firefox
Close the About:Config editor & close the preferences. https links in emails should now open in Firefox.
