Yakuake, huh?
« on: October 23, 2012, 01:25:52 AM »
Got the message from Archie, "Help test yakuake" that said "please report on this thread."  Well, there's no reply button on that thread, so I'm reporting here:

Even tho yakuake was installed on this 32-bit up-to-date pclos, it must be installed by default, I don't think I ever installed it.  Anyway, altho it appears in Synaptic as being installed, it does not
appear in the menu.  I ran it by snapping on the file when I found its location in "Find files and folders," and a little black notify box came up and went away quickly at the bottom right of the
screen that said Yakuake is installed.  But no terminal emulator showed up.  so i went to a regular bash terminal and typed yakuake, and sure enough, a box dropped down from the top of
the screen.  It could not be made bigger, it was going to be 1/2 screen size forever.  It appears that it actually is a terminal--I pinged my ISP from there, just to see if it worked, and it did.
I see no value at all in a terminal that requires another terminal to put it on screen, and when it's there, you can't make it any bigger than it is, half-screen size. I hate to be so negative, but to
me, it's useless!  So, Archie, here's your report.  I suggest you work on something that might be worthwhile, like Google-earth, which won't run.

Yakuake is a just utility that runs in the background for users to have quick access to a console. It could be useful for me since I use Konsole all the time. The test is an upgrade to the version we have on our repository whose maintainer is already on vacation/retired.

Google-Earth is being maintained by another developer, pinoc and I have no wish to take charge of it while he is still around. It is just a simple matter of etiquette.

Once you run Yakuake, all you have to do is press F12 to make it appear and again F12 to make it disappear. If you want to close the utility completely. Press F12 and type the following, pkill yakuake ... nothing can be simpler.

I find your post a little blatant.

Yakuake is a terminal emulator with some nice features.
What you call "regular bash terminal" is called Konsole and is also a terminal emulator.

If you don't like it don't use it. But there are people who do like it and use it. You must respect other people's needs and tastes too.

Are you aware of the work Archie is doing for PCLinuxOS? Have you any idea?
Have you been in the forum lately?

You find Google Earth worthwhile, I personally find it worthless.

And you can't post back in Testing forum because you have not signed up as a tester...

Hope my short answers give you some idea of how I felt when I read your post and some food for thought...

Hi DM

Re google-earth, uninstall it in synaptic, then reinstall. Known upstream issue. Thread somewhere on forum.
