access user folder
« on: October 21, 2012, 01:07:23 PM »
I had this working some time ago but since the last big update I can't seem to figure out what I am doing wrong. This is no doubt a user problem so if someone could point me in the right direction I will be very grateful. Its been a long time since I originally set this up.

I have 2 userids, ABC and DEF. I want user ABC to be able to access a folder in DEF's home so that ABC can transfer a file from DEF folder to ABC's folder. I thought that at one time if you went to the folder properties there was a share option where you specified that a user could read the file. If I use properties now, I can see a permissions tab but I thought there was a share tab there to??? I can't see a share tab on any folder?? Is that a figment of my imagination or maybe I am looking in the wrong place or my memory is playing tricks with me?

I have set the permissions so that others can read and modify the folder. I am using Dolphin. I log onto user id ABC, then go to home/DEF which should show me all the folders in home/DEF but I get a Dolphin message that says 'could not enter folder /home/DEF'. I am sure that I am missing something basic but can't figure it out? Wasn't there someplace where you set up what folders could be shared by others?? I looked in 'Configure your Computer' and 'Configure your Desktop' but can't see anything obvious?? I also looked around in Dolphin but can't see where to set this up.

thanks for any guidance....Ron

You could add user abc to the group of def and add def to the abc group.

By default the user abc should not be able to go into the home of def and def should not be able to go into abc homes. You can change this by

1. changing permissions of the home directory and files with in that directory. Though that is so un-secure as it would also let anyone else on the system do the same.

2. add the user to the others group.  You can do this using "userdrake" and using the group tab. Once set you would have Read/Write permission of their home folder and whatever permission that is set for the group for the files/folders within their home folder

Well I got it to work but not quite the way I remember it working. It seems to me that at one time you could specify just a folder and set it up so that other user's could have access to only that folder. What I did was sign on to each user then go to home and select the user id folder. I then changed the permissions - others - to 'can view and modify'. Not very secure but for what I want to do its simple and does the job. It allows either user to change anything.... got to be careful. I just want to move some pictures and few documents so it works for me.

7272andy - I tried your suggestion but on my permissions tab, advanced,  I cannot see anything that says 'add'?? I have a window that says Access Permissions then class, show entrys, write entrys, enter etc

youcanto - I like this idea so I used 'Configure Your Computer' and then in System - Users I changed the group ids to add in the different user's. In ABC I added DEF to the group but it didn't make any difference.

thanks....Ron

Yes I recall a 'Share' option from the right click menu of a folder ....  I don't recall using it, but do remember it being there.

I believe that I am on 4.8.3, cant remember how to check so if someone could refresh my memory??? I try to keep up to date so I have all the latest updates. I see 4.8.3 in my synaptic listings.

Looking at the properties posted by menotu, I see 5 tabs but when I do that I only see 4 tabs, I do not see a Share tab???? Did I miss something in setting up Dolphin??? I am sure that there was a Share tab there some time ago so what changed??? My access permissions is also very different than what is posted???

I am using 4.8.3 and I only see 4 tabs also.  The one you want is labelled 'Permissions'.

To check which version of KDE you are using, select 'About KDE' in the 'Help' menu of Dolphin.

You should look at the commands - "chmod" , "chown" and "chgrp".

Once you understand those commands, things will be a snap and you will never have to worry about how to get it to work again.  ;) ;D

Hmmm. My mistake I only have 4 tabs too, I hadn't noticed.

To share the folder the way you described I did the following:
  • log in as def
  • Find the folder you wish to share, right click on it and select properties
  • Click on the permissions tab
  • Click on the Advanced Permissions button
  • Click on the Add Entry button
  • Select user abc from the drop down list and OK out of the windows
  • log the users out and back in again

I do not appear to have an "Add Entry" button in the Advanced Permissions window .....  can you post a pic?

Thanks Andy ......  so the question is what am I missing, or what have I set, that prevents that option from being present here?

BTW .....  I also recollect seeing that option on a previous install ....
