Can't install "cheese" from synaptic - cheese install SOLVED
« on: October 20, 2012, 08:42:22 PM »
Hello all

I'm running KDE 2012.8 and need assistance

I try to mark "cheese" for install using synaptic and i get a window showing:

[ To be upgraded
      gnome-desktop
      libgweather
      libgweather1 ]

I click "Mark" and next window shows:

[ Could not mark all packages for installation or upgrade

     cheese:
       Depends: evolution-data-server (>= 2.22.0)
       Depends: libcheese-gtk.so.18  ]

Looked for ( evolution ...) and ( libcheese ...) in synaptic and could not find either.

Any comments / help appreciated.

Did you Reload and applied updates before trying to install "cheese"?

System was and is up to date according to synaptic.

Just tried again and same problem - I don't understand why "weather librarys" would have anything to do with installing a web cam - possibly there is a problem with the "cheese" install package.

Here in FullMonty I have Cheese installed by default but never ran it.

I have in Synaptic evolution-data-server but no libcheese file.

When I launched Cheese it doesn't run because "No device found" :o :D

evolution-data-server Ver 2.32 is in the 'main' section of the repository.

'cheese'  provides   libcheese-gtk.so.18

The problem here is that evolution-data-server cannot be installed because it needs libgdata7.

Cheese now installs, but..........

Can not take pictures with Kamerka, Kamoso, or Cheese --- Me thinks libraries are still SCREWED UP !

Thanks for help provided so far.

Launch them from a terminal and copy/paste in your next post any output you get when you attempt to take a pic.

Just17

I ran synaptic and checked for any updates - none.  Then i "completely uninstalled" - cheese / Kamerka / Kamoso.

Rebooted system. rechecked synaptic for updates - still none.

Then reinstalled - cheese / Kamerka / Kamoso.

Opened terminal and ran the following:

 [jimlw1@localhost ~]$ cat /etc/issue*
PCLinuxOS release 2012 (PCLinuxOS) for i586
Kernel 3.2.18-pclos2.bfs on a 4-processor i686 / \l
Welcome to PCLinuxOS
-------------------------
[jimlw1@localhost ~]$

Cheese:

[jimlw1@localhost ~]$ cheese
cheese: xcb_io.c:140: dequeue_pending_request: Assertion `req == dpy->xcb->pending_requests' failed.
Aborted
[jimlw1@localhost ~]$

The above is what appeared - only - after 5 "snapshots" - and camera(cheese) shut down.
I never located any of the snapshots that were supposedly taken.
Result -- No Photos taken / stored

Kamerka:

[jimlw1@localhost ~]$ kamerka
Kamerka version 0.8.1
    Copyright (C) 2011 Sebastian Krzyszkowiak
Kamerka comes with ABSOLUTELY NO WARRANTY.
This is free software, and you are welcome to redistribute it
under certain conditions; type `./kamerka --license' for details.
kamerka(5311) videowidget::setPicture: Could not open .counter file!
qrc:/qml/kamerka.qml:106:14: QML Image: Cannot open: file:///home/jimlw1/Pictures/kamerka/image1.png
[jimlw1@localhost ~]$

This is what appeared after 1st / only snapshot. Notifications showed: Photo has been stored in file
/home/jimlw1/Pictures/kamerka/image1.png. -- light was still on in the WebCam.
Closed Kamerka with "x" in upper right corner of window. No photo found in indicated Directory/Folder.
Result -- No Photos taken / stored

Kamoso:

[jimlw1@localhost ~]$ Kamoso
bash: Kamoso: command not found
[jimlw1@localhost ~]$

Kamoso - picture retriever  <-- Listed under "Video" in Menu.
Result -- No Photos taken / stored

EDIT: (Kamoso did open when started from Menu - took / saved 1 photo, then promptly froze - Cam light was still on, but picture / controls were frozen.)

Thanks for any response/comments

Cannot open: file:///home/jimlw1/Pictures/kamerka/image1.png

Check that the permissions for the path allow you full access ......  it 'seems' as if the app wants to save but is prevented from doing so.

You might also try changing the path the file should be saved to to see if it makes any difference.

To open Kamoso in a terminal use

kamoso

Commands are case sensitive  ;)

****

It seems that Cheese is installed, and you took 5 pics before it crashed.

/home/<user-name>/Webcam is where cheese saves its pics and videos here.

Do you have such a directory?

***

Could you copy and paste the terminal output from this command

cat /etc/apt/sources.list | grep rpm
