(SOLVED) Basic Sound Configuration and Skype
« on: October 20, 2012, 08:35:59 PM »
I installed Skype, and noticed that I could not record my voice. Then I installed "pulseaudio" with its additional related entries (modules, utils, etc.) , and "pavucontrol", and went to "Configure Your Computer", "Sound", ticket all options and rebooted.

After that I noticed that I caused some conflict in the sound configuration:

  • VLC reproduced music CD with static sound and a lot of interference.
  • The Skype test call not only did not recorded my voice, but the reproduction of the Skype system call giving the instructions, had the same problems of static sound and a lot of interference. And the Skype sound system alert for contacts coming online or going out produced a pinch sound, kind of interference.
  • Clementine did not reproduce music CD at all.
  • UMPlayer reproduced correctly music CD.
  • Youtube videos reproduced music correctly.
  • RadioTray (internet radio) reproduced music correctly.

I opened PulseAudio Volume Control, but could not figure out how to set it up. I don't want to scramble more with music configuration and make things worse.

I did some research in this Forum with:

  • "Sound configuration"
  • "KDE sound configuration"

I found many issues but unfortunately noting for a bare sound misconfiguration.

I also did Google research for Microphone configuration for Skype, and found instructions oriented to another distro users, not so applicable for PCLOS.

I have PCLOS KDE 2012 64-bit fully updated and a Logitech HD Webcam c615.

From AlsaMixer v1.0.25 I obtained the following information:

My "proc/asound/version" is: Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version 1.0.23.

My " /proc/asound/cards" are:

0 [SB    ]: HDA-Intel - HDA ATI SB
HDA ATI SB at 0xfe9f4000 irq 16
1 [C615 ]: USB-Audio - HD Webcam C615
HD Webcam C615 at usb-0000:00:13.2-5, high speed

Thank you for any orientation.

You are running a yet to be released and unsupported version of pclinuxos.

With this version, you are the one who are supposed to figure out why things are not as they should be and then report to the dev team or discuss your issue in the designated area of the forum where anything related to this future release is discussed, not in the general sections of the forum.

Thank you muungwana, I was not aware of it.  :o
The thing is that I am just a user with limited Linux experience, and I do not know how to proceed from this point on. How should I report this issue to the dev team?

P.S.: BTW when I said PCLOS KDE 64-bit fully updated is because I changed the original kernel in order to make PCLOS recognize my 8 GB RAM.

64-bit is still under testing so first thing you should do is apply to be a tester so you can post your report on the Testers' forum. Start here.

what does the following command give you?

uname -a

The title is also misleading, problems related to sound in kde are problems related to phonon. Your problem is not related to phonon and hence its it not a kde desktop issue.

You have problems with sykpe primarily, your title should have skype in it.

1.- This is the output of "uname -a":

[hugorincon@localhost ~]$ uname -a
Linux localhost.localdomain 2.6.38.8-pclos3.pae.bfs #1 SMP PREEMPT Fri Jul 8 18:23:21 CDT 2011 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux
[hugorincon@localhost ~]$

2.- I already edited the title of this thread to include "Skype" in it.
(P.S.: And I deleted the word KDE)

unist,
You are running 32 bit PCLOS with a pae kernel ......  a full 64 bit OS is a different thing.
So no worries there.

Regarding the 'scratchy' sound .....  there is a solution to it posted on the forum ...  I will look for the link.

Here it is .....  http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,106034.0.html

Run Skype and make a Text Call to Skype to check your set up.

While doing this check the various tabs on PA Vol Control .... and make sure that Skype is using the correct input device for your voice (MIC) .....

Just17: Thank you for your tip. I applied it and the scratchy sound in VLC disappeared at once!.

In Skype I obtained mixed results: the scratchy sound disappeared for the system voice giving instructions, but my own voice was was not reproduced well. I am trying with the options for microphone, but still have not found the correct one.

UPDATE: I notice that I also experience the same small "static" noise with a Nettalk phone that I have. Because of this, I conclude that the quality of my voice recording in Skype is caused by my broadband cable service provider. Therefore, the issue of this thread is really solved, and I will mark it as such.

It might be ....  if you have a VERY slow up speed or were using the internet connection for other things at the same time.

On the other hand it could be something else .....  have you tried recording from the same MIC locally (without going out on the internet)?

Just17: thank you for your orientation. I recorded my voice and I listened it well using headphones with microphone incorporated. I also used Skype to call a friend in another country and the quality of my communication was fine.
