I started Gmixer this way and again sliders up and no mutes, but still no sound either.
wanted to try something else, but now:
[root@localhost root]# Gmixer
bash: Gmixer: command not found
and still can't start it from the menu (nothing happens)

In order to start an application it has to exist, and to exist on a system it has to be installed. Typing the same command repeatedly, and getting the same "No such file or directory" response tells you that you have either entered the command wrong, or the application is not installed.
For us to help, we have to know what is happening on your computer. When asked for information, you need to supply everything asked for, not just part of what was asked for, because you are the only one that can see your computer monitor directly. The rest of us have to depend on what information you supply.
I asked you to run the alsaconf command, followed by checking the mixer of your choice. I have no way of knowing what you actually did, because you only furnished a repeat of a command to launch an application that seems hasn't been installed. I haven't a clue what alsaconf showed for results, or even if you ran the command at all, because you didn't supply that information.
Using Synaptic, install the
alsa-utils package which will supply
alsamixer.
Just17 asked you to run two commands and you ran the first, got no feedback, then ran the wrong command for the second. I had to ask you to do the same two commands, in reverse order, one at a time, to get you to provide the information needed. You really need to stay focused and pay attention to what is asked for, and follow the instructions exactly, for the information provided to have meaning. You also need to at least make an attempt to understand what the procedures are trying to accomplish, and if you don't understand, ask for clarification. We're more than happy to explain what we are trying to accomplish with each command, if you ask. If you don't ask, we assume you already know, at least in general, what we are about.
