Replace Network Center with Wicd
« on: October 19, 2012, 10:23:00 AM »
Warning: possibly a very n00bish question.

I like Wicd as a network manager, so I installed it in PCLOS. The result is that now it starts together with Network Center, which is not what I want. How do I stop, kill or eradicate the stock manager? In Debian I just uninstall the stock network's packages, but I don't know which package is Network Center (synaptic has several for "network", none of which seem to apply).

you should have,if not, create a text file in your home directory and name it ".net_applet"

in it, add this line and net_applet will not show up at log in

I only got to use the PCLOS computer again today.

Anyway, removing the applet only scratches the surface; I need to completely disable, remove, uninstall or otherwise eradicate the stock network service/daemon. For instance, if I were doing this in Debian I'd just disable or uninstall network-manager and network-manager-gnome, so as to let the Wicd daemon be the only one taking care of the connection.

I don't know how to do this in PCLOS, though. I've tried disabling net_applet and draknetcenter, but there's still a service other than Wicd connecting the Wifi before I've even had a chance to configure Wicd. I've had a look in the ps -A listing, where I'd find the stock network service in Debian, but I can only see wpa_supplicant running and I can't very well uninstall that or I'll disable all wifi connectivity altogether. I think.

Any ideas?

From what i know, pclinuxos network tool will auto connect the wifi on startup when the computer when down when it was still connected.

Connect using pclinuxos network tool and then manually disconnect and it should no longer auto connect and you can safely use your tool of choice.

I do not think its possible to completely remove it since its part of the network center tool. Its best to just let it stay there unused.
