[SOLVED] Full Monty will not run on boot-up
« on: October 19, 2012, 07:15:24 AM »
Hi All

I have just received a DVD of the Full Monty, release 2012-9, from a fellow user in Holland.
On first re-booting with the DVD on my machine - nothing happened - Blank screen!!
After Googling I found a comment that you have to re-boot TWICE to get it to work.
Tried this and it came up - wonderful!!
Today I tried again as I wanted to check some of the installed Software before I do a full instal.
No matter what I do it will not start!! It shows me the "Booting System" bar and then hangs.
If I select "No Splash Screen" I can see it hangs while checking USB!!!???

My computer has an Intel MBD, Intel CPU, 2Gb RAM and is currently running PCLOS 2012-2 with no problems AND the USB ports work fine.

Any help with this would be appreciated. Thanks

If you have anything plugged into a USB port try unplugging it to see if it makes any difference ......  that includes hubs, printers etc etc

Well I have to say I'm afraid that the problem is NOT solved. Removing the USB devices works but then you have no KBD or Mouse!!!

The installation will also not recognize my Hard Drive and keeps just locking up!! After a weekend at it my feeling is that this product had been released too early, has not had proper testing or is not compatible with all Hardware!!

I've gone back and reinstalled 2007 and updated it to 2012-2 and it's working 100%!! (On the same machine!!!)

My BIG question now is - Can I instal Scribus 1.4 on this?? There is a known bug in the 1.3 series and I have been recommended to use 1.4 to get round this. I tried the Mandriva rpms but they need dependencies not listed in the repository.

Has anyone done this yet and if so can you help me out?? (This IS rather urgent).

Thanks a lot

You might consider installing Scribus from the PCLOS repository ......  as is recommended you do for all applications.

It is version 1.4

I would suggest you look closely at the boot medium .....  was the ISO good, did it get a good burn?

Just because you did not get it working does not mean anything other than you did not get it working ......  not that it is not ready for release!

There is no OS released yet that is compatible with "all Hardware".
To expect such a thing is foolish!

Thanks Just 17

I've just checked the Repo again as I'm sure I did it earlier today (and I DID reload first) and it says "Scribus 1.3.9-3pclos2011'!!! So where is 1.4??

The DVD I got from Holland comes from a user who is using it now and he has it working. I suppose it could be faulty but I doubt it!! At times it does one thing and other times another. It is clearly not happy with my hardware here whist 2012-2 is!!

If an earlier version works and a later one doesn't I see this as some kind of driver/set-up problem. I agree that no OpSys can work on ALL hardware platforms but if an earlier version does whilst a later one doesn't that seems to indicate a software fault! (IMHO).

But thanks for your advise - I'm happy with 2012-2 I just need to get my Scribus updated!!!

That 2012.02 installation of yours is mostly deprecated/outdated. The updates which you think you have may not be all that new.

Please open Synaptic > Settings > Repositories. Click and select the currently used mirror. Look below now for a box called Sections. What is in it?
Ideally it should show main updates nonfree kde games xfce4. Please note that it should be kde and not kde4.
If it is kde4, then you need to go through a big update.

PCLinuxOS is a rolling distribution and that means one needs to update as a whole for best results.
Packaging well will cure headaches of many :) But learning to package will cause headaches in many :(

@ianw
What motherboard or portable are you using ?
Maybe someone else has the same and the answers on your startup problems.
Some strange workarounds:
In BIOS switch from init AGP to internal PCI, after that everything worked fine on the AGP
from PCI auto to manual.
other settings in the type of powermanagement

IDE DVD from first IDE slave to seccond IDE master

And then there are the startup options in the Grub startline as:
vesa noscsi noapic nolapic, and many more.

The FM 2012.09 is based on the same kernel, hardware support and KDE base as the standard PCLinuxOS 2012.08 KDE
Wish I had "the" answer.

Even if the media is good, there could be difficulties reading it by your optical drive.

If you are getting different results when booting live .....  as in sometimes there are things not working correctly, but other times they do, then that implies to me a problem reading a good media, or a media which is borderline.

@ianw
Do you have another DVD Reader/Burner (or neighbour wih one ;) ) to make a copy to another media for instance to a DVD-R ? Your copy is burned on DVD+R

Ed

P.S.
New Scribus is not in the Repo's,
See why:

Thanks to all for helping out - very much appreciated!!

To 'Sling-Shot' - Thanks for this info, I checked as you said and the setting IS "main updates nonfree kde games xfce4".
But now I'm confused - why do I need a Games Update to update a DTP package??
Also what do you mean exactly by "You need to go through a big update??" Can you supply step-by-step instructions or point me to a tutorial please??

To 'DeBaas' (hope you are!!) - I have a single user Desktop with an Intel MBD and CPU, 2Gb RAM, Segate HDD, Genius KBD and Mouse so nothing out of the ordinary there!! AND it all works fine with other Linux versions. (Since 2007 I have used 4 different versions of Linux with two to three releases of each and NEVER had a problem and still don't now that I have gone back to 2012-2!!)

To 'Just 17' - My DVD never gives me problems and works with 2012-2 OK, plays music and video and burns discs OK so I very much doubt it is faulty.

Last question - IS Scribus 1.4 available or not?? I seem to be getting conflicting answers to this 'Just 17' says "Scribus 1.4.1 is showing here ......  but it is in testing section ... " but you did not say where "here" is!! Also are YOU using it right now??

Thanks a lot guys

No I am not using Scribus.

1.4.1 is present in the 'testing' section of the repository.

As linked to earlier in the thread 1.4 appears to have some problems for those who tried it. Whether those issues would affect your use or not, I have no idea.

To make the 1.4 available to you, use Synaptic, do a full upgrade, add the word  testing  to the 'sections' and search for Scribus .....  1.4 should make itself available.

Install it and delete  testing  from the sections.

If it does not work well for you then simply uninstalling it using Synaptic will get you back to where you are presently.

Thanks 'Just 17'

I have done what you suggest ......

Go to Synaptic>Settings>Repositories and it shows

http://mirror.cpsc.ucalgary.ca/mirror/pclinuxos/pclinuxos/apt/

Under Sections it says "main updates nonfree kde4 games"

I added "testing" at the end thus "main updates nonfree kde games testing"

and search for "Scribus" - I get "Scribus 1.3.9-3pclos2011" (same as before!!)

I then tried and removed the '4' from "kde4" - Same result.... only 1.3.9!!??

How come you can see 1.4 and I can't?? Difference in the mirror perhaps??
