SOLVED KDE Screen resolution problems on rebooting
« on: October 18, 2012, 12:26:48 PM »
SOLUTION VGA plug was slightly pulled out on one side allowing the screen to display but some signals (Pins 4, 11 or 12) were missing which indicate the resolutions available to the PC
If you are only getting 1024 * 768 (the default) you may have a damaged lead / connector or the lead as in my case had come a bit loose.
See here near the bottom for more info
http://pinouts.ru/Video/VGA15_pinout.shtml

I shut down my machine several times each day to save energy.
Before shutting down the last time I did a system update and it only updated Firefox and Thunderbird.
Upon reboot my desktop came up as 1024 * 768
I checked and the hardware in PCC is set correctly to 1920 * 1080 Radeon 2000 and later
In the KDE control centre I get the offer of 1024 * 768 and below.
I have tried installing the other driver options but cannot get to the correct resolution and have looked around for an answer for the last hour.
I am running KDE 32 bit fully up to date
Any help much appreciated.
Tony

Try going through the driver selection process again in PCC as if the incorrect selection was made and see if that triggers it to behaving correctly.

In other words select other than Radeon 2000 and then back to Radeon 2000 and apply etc ........

Hi Just17, I did as you suggested, then rebooted but I first popped into Puppy linux where I discovered the same problem.
For some reason I looked at the back of my monitor only to find one side of the VGA plug was slightly out.
Pushed it back in and hey presto both PCLinuxOS and Puppy are now working  fine!
What a strange fault, many thanks for your help, I only wish I had looked there an hour ago but it never occurred to me as there were no other symptoms of a the VGA plug being out!
Cheers tony
