files won't open from Dolphin SOLVED!
« on: October 17, 2012, 04:55:42 PM »
Recently noticing that a lot of folders and files won't open from a Dolphin window.  These have a little red hyphen at the top left when you initially snap on them. Sometimes, with perseverence, they will open.
What's going on here? Do I need to modify something somewhere?

Also notice that as I write this, all the words are underlined with a little red squiggly line, like they're misspelled or something. Never saw that before.

system:  3.2.18-pclos1.pae.bfs #1 SMP PREEMPT
All updates have been installed.

All help gratefully appreciated--doug

what web browser do you use?  what dictionary have you installed to make corrections?  verify the language and the dictionary used

not sure what symbol you are talking about, can you take a picture of it and upload it to postimage or another image service?

Do not click on the icon ......  click on the name following it.

Clicking on the icon is to select/deselect the item

Yes, that works. Is this new?  I've been using PCLOS and Dolphin for a couple of years now, and never (knowingly) encountered this before.
Anyway, Thank you. I 'll certainly remember to do that in the future.  --doug

the symbols to mark files on dolphin? no, present since 2010

you can't see them when you see files as a list, when you see them as icons the symbols are more visible

Doug, you can turn off those annoying marking and have the directories/files working like you are used to here;

In Dolphin menu bar, Settings --> Configure Dolphin... click the General section, then uncheck the Show selection marker box under the Behavior tab, and then click Apply.

Of what use be there for joy, if not for the sharing thereof?

Reply to super villain:  I use Firefox in the latest synaptic release--I think it's 16.0.1.  I have not idea what dictionary it uses, nor do I know how to find out.
I assume it is for US English.  Anyway, the little wavy red lines do not appear in this post or my previous reply--that may have been some sort of glitch.

Thanx, OldPolack.  Now I've learned two things: not only how to make the icons work like they used to, but how and where the Dolphin setup
thingie is! I never noticed the little wrench up in the right-hand corner.

I think I can safely mark this topic SOLVED, with appreciation to all who participated.

if you saw the red lines and you didn't wrote anything, then it was a glitch, the correction only happens when you are writing something

when you are typing on the forum, when you are posting or replying select the word that is marked as red and right click, mark check spelling and select a dictionary from the list, if there is none, add one

I was using LibreOffice Draw the other day and got the red wavy line. It looked just like the line you get when you misspell a word but I know I did not misspell "Sam, automotive" and some of the other words that it was showing. Think goodness it did not print the line
