[Solved] HP Officejet 4500 - failure.
« on: October 22, 2012, 02:07:39 PM »
I have an uptodate KDE version, but my printer after last update is not able to print a test page.

I get "Officejet_4500_G510g-m
Print job failed - required plug-in not found (502)"

Looking through the forum I saw a reference similar to mine that suggested we remove hplib and reload it, then using CLI
enter hp-setup.

Which I did and got the following display:

[alpha@localhost ~]$ hp-setup

HP Linux Imaging and Printing System (ver. 3.12.9)
Printer/Fax Setup Utility ver. 9.0

Copyright (c) 2001-14 Hewlett-Packard Development Company, LP
This software comes with ABSOLUTELY NO WARRANTY.
This is free software, and you are welcome to distribute it
under certain conditions. See COPYING file for more details.

Searching... (bus=usb, search=(None), desc=0)
\warning: No PPD found for model officejet_4500_g510g-m using new algorithm. Trying old algorithm...

Done.

My Officejet 4500 is showing a red X on the HP Device Manager, and I'm at a loss on how to debug it to work again.
As it was running fine till I tried to print (after update) last eve.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

-- added a few hours later

Seems on my machine under cups I have the ppd's

file:///etc/cups/ppd/Officejet_4500_G510g-m.ppd
file:///etc/cups/ppd/Officejet_4500_G510g-m_2.ppd
file:///etc/cups/ppd/Officejet_4500_G510g-m_fax.ppd
file:///etc/cups/ppd/Officejet_4500_G510g-m_fax_2.ppd

yet I get the 502 error
I get "Officejet_4500_G510g-m
Print job failed - required plug-in not found (502)"

go figure....

Now my gz's on the system show only
file:///usr/share/ppd/HP/hp-color_laserjet_4500-ps.ppd.gz
file:///usr/share/ppd/HP/hp-designjet_4500mfp.ppd.gz
file:///usr/share/ppd/HP/hp-designjet_4500ps.ppd.gz

and the link for the officejet says we should have the ones I have installed.
(file:///etc/cups/ppd/Officejet_4500_G510g-m.ppd)
http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/models/officejet/officejet_4500_g510g-m.html

so I'm lost - any guess from our experts here?

Running from CLI and using the GUI to try and print a test page, I might have boiled it down too a missing plugin.

hp-diagnose_plugin

Here's the CLI result:

Got a status that I don't understand, from the print troubleshooter screen

The printer's state message is: "/ur/lib/cups/filter/foomatic-rip failed".

If this is the problem, not sure how to fix it.  Just amaze I found out this is malfunctioning with hplip.

Session follows: (as much as I could post)

Page 1 (Scheduler not running?):
{'cups_connection_failure': False}
Page 2 (Choose printer):
{'cups_dest': <cups.Dest Officejet_4500_G510g-m (default)>,
 'cups_instance': None,
 'cups_queue': 'Officejet_4500_G510g-m',
 'cups_queue_listed': True}
Page 3 (Check printer sanity):
{'cups_device_uri_scheme': u'hp',
 'cups_printer_dict': {'device-uri': u'hp:/usb/Officejet_4500_G510g-m?serial=CN229G215705CQ',
                       'printer-info': u'Officejet_4500_G510g-m',
                       'printer-is-shared': True,
                       'printer-location': u'',
                       'printer-make-and-model': u'HP Officejet 4500 g510g-m hpijs, 3.12.9',
                       'printer-state': 3,
                      'printer-state-message': u'/usr/lib/cups/filter/foomatic-rip failed',
                       'printer-state-reasons': [u'none'],

I have used HPLIP to install all the printers I have used, but I think it failed me this time.

I deleted all printers, faxes, (not the cups pdf tho) via PCC.

Added a printer via PCC, the one in question, and it was able to print a test page, and documents.

Guess I solved it by using PCC, and will use HPLIP just for test pages.

Very confusing, but a lovely trip thru the forums and 3,456 pages of htmls (ha) I found on the net regarding this problem.

Thank you to all the readers who viewed this post, and thank goodness for the fix via PCC, again a great distro. ;D
