The government is set to make a decision on Tuesday on whether or not to extradite Gary McKinnon to the US over hacks on US government computers.

The long-running saga has dragged on for over a decade without any resolution, but on Sunday McKinnon’s solicitor Karen Todner confirmed on Twitter that a decision is expected imminently.

Confirmation recd that Home Sec. will make announcement on #extradtion of Gary McKinnon on Tuesday afternoon.

McKinnon, who suffers from Asperger's Syndrome, is accused of hacking into computer systems used by NASA and the Pentagon, which his legal team argue was done while looking for evidence of extraterrestrial life.

Looks like common sense has prevailed...   http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-19957138

Quite surprised. Didn't think May had it in her, although McKinnon isn't free yet:
Quote
She said it was now for the Director of Public Prosecutions, Keir Starmer QC, to decide whether he should face trial in the UK.

  • there is no limitation on imagination
i sense that the americans don't want the embarrassment of an extradition, given the emotional opposition thereto.  with the extradition out of the way, the british government will now quietly sideline the case and may drop it altogether.

a good result for a change.

The whole thing is a little ridiculous anyway.

How could a government put an individual citizen on trial for doing what all of the governments are doing?

They would have to do it in total secrecy which would create such a backlash against all of them that it would hardly be worth it.

All the governments and others with power have discovered that an open internet is something that they will never fully control with their laws etc. so they are resorting to pseudo-legal intimidation to create examples in an attempt to scare people into playing by their current and never fully defined...or legal... rules.

Why should they change what they have always done? All governments will secretly 'break' the law from time to time. Killing suspected criminals in drone attacks without a trial would be called murder if anyone else did it. Governments lie, governments cheat, governments print money. Governments give themselves the right to do all sorts of things which are illegal for their citizens. It's never stopped them prosecuting citizens when it suits them and, most of the time, that's good.

From the Independent

Computer hacker, Gary McKinnon, will face no further criminal proceedings over the hacking of US government computers the Director of Public Prosecutions, Keir Starmer QC, said today.

Mr McKinnon, 46, admitted he accessed the government computers but says he was looking for evidence of UFOs.

He could have faced up to 60 years in prison if he was convicted in the US.

In October McKinnon sensationally won his fight against extradition to the United States, as the Home Secretary, Theresa May, ruled that the former computer hacker was not well enough to stand trial overseas.

He was permitted to remain in the UK after medical reports showed he would be very likely to kill himself if extradited.

Mr McKinnon, who had been fighting extradition since 2002, suffers from Asperger's Syndrome.

Both Prime Minister David Cameron, who held talks on the case with President Barack Obama, and his deputy, Nick Clegg, previously condemned plans to send him to the US.

I wonder how everyone would feel if it was THEIR computer that was hacked. We all complain when they start hacking this forum. So it is ok, to hack someone else? It is wrong, the US should just drop a drone on him, or have the CIA take him out, like 007 would.

The US Soldier that put out all the information to wikileaks, should be tried for treason and be put to death. I don't care whose citizen is the one that does it. When he went in he swore and oath, he broke that oath. Governments NEED secrets, ALL governments and people do. Why use linux then, so you can keep your computer safe and YOUR secrets safe also. You would feel very upset if someone hacked YOUR computer and put out your information. I do not care how petty or useless the information is, you would still feel violated and be mad.
If it wasn't for the USA and it's evil government, and the 10's of thousand of citizens that died to protect them, England and all of Europe would be speaking German or Russian.

It's only going to be the end of this topic because it starts to go against the one that will end it.

That's too cryptic for me. Maybe I missed something.

Wait for it. It will become evident.

If I say, I will get kicked out with this thread.
