KDE 4.8.3 Upgrade - broken packages [SOLVED]
« on: September 08, 2012, 08:11:13 AM »
I am trying to do the upgrade to KDE 4.8.3 - followed Old Polack's directions and get to where I hit APPLY and get the Fix Broken Packages message.

When I try to fix them I get

E: Error, pkgProblemResolver::Resolve generated breaks, this may be caused by held packages.
E: Unable to correct dependencies

If I then list the broken packages I have 7 (all kde-utils-*).

If I unmark them and try apply again I get

E: Error, pkgProblemResolver::Resolve generated breaks, this may be caused by held packages.
E: Unable to correct dependencies

What should I try now?

Just continue with the upgrade. After unmarking all the "bad" packages, and the second window appeared with the above errors, I just clicked Apply again, and the rest of the installation proceeded as usual. Following the major part of the upgrade, I manually uninstalled the problem 4.6.5 packages and installed the corresponding 4.8.3 packages.

I just found out a couple of days ago that I had missed upgrading my oldest KDE4 installation, for about three months, so wasn't really sure how that would work out. I'm typing this from that installation, now fully upgraded, including KDE 4.8.3. It really was rather uneventful, after getting past the above mentioned window showing the errors.

I tried that and it didn't work.  I did get it to work by using the apply updatable changes and it seemed to do it.

I have more systems that are much older and will detail my results as I refine the process.

Thanks for the help!

I know I'm late in doing the KDE upgrade, but was in the middle of many resumes and job apps and just didn't want to screw up my system when update-notifier first started reporting a repo problem a couple of months ago.

I get the same "problem resolver - held packages" error message when following OP's instructions.  Except that first, when I hit Mark All Upgrades, this message comes up:

To be kept:
kdeutils4
kdeutils4-ark
"   -filelight
"   -kcharselect
"   -kdf
"   -kfloppy
"   -kgpg
"   -kwallet

There is an option to Cancel and one to Mark.  I click on Mark and then get the first "Error: Resolver and Unable to Correct Dependencies" message that HWDude reports.

But if I try to fix broken packages, the message just repeats.  There is no possibility to uncheck the above "to be kept" packages from any list.  APPLY brings up a message: "Could not apply changes. Fix broken packages first!"

Sorry, I'm beyond my depth here.  Any help appreciated.

Don't try to fix the broken packages, un mark them instead, then continue with the upgrade.

Got it, all appears to have gone well.  Thank you!

But WAIT!   You still have to do the last step to finish the process...

In Synaptic, search on "kde-utils"

Now install the previously "broken" packages from the new list:

kde-utils-ark
"            -filelight
"            -kcharselect
"            -kdf
"            -kfloppy
"            -kgpg
"            -kwallet

NOW  you've completed the upgrade!
