Dual-booting was my original intention. I had planned to install U----u (version 10 point 04) to this computer (after wiping it with DBAN) and then reinstalling Windows along side of it but U----u would not install (even though, when booting the computer with the Live CD, everything worked fine).

IF I'm not mistaken, when dual booting with windows, windows has to be installed first

It already has Windows installed!

Back in 2005, I bought a Medion Akoya LS computer from Best Buy. It had (and currently has) Windows-XP Home Edition installed.

Hi lhb1142,

Time for more drastic action. Roll up sleeves etc.

Can I draw you attention to two proggys which may be of use:

Clonezilla - this is a live linux cd which "clones" disk partions or whole disks. Easy to use, recovery slightly trickier, I swear by this and it has saved me many times.
You can save off your system as is to say a usb hard drive, and recover if needed.

Unetbootin - this is a live USB creator and it is very simple to use. Available for all os. No more disk burning, yawn. Point it an a verified iso and boot from your live USB. (There is a suggestion that there is an issue with the CD drive on your system, so it might work better.)

Some links:

http://crunchbanglinux.org/forums/topic/17985/happy-camper/

The above will give you some ideas, crunchbang allegedly works.

I have an intel atom box, 1.6, 2 GB Ram. Runs KDE fine. I also have problems with all my intel devices, I have blacklisted intel now.

Good luck, let us know how you get on.

Dear Phil,

It's interesting that you resurrected that old question from Launchpad: https://answers.launchpad.net/another distro/+question/39488]https://answers.launchpad.net/another distro/+question/39488]https://answers.launchpad.net/another distro/+question/39488 - it was my own question from back in 2008 when I tried to install U----u to this computer with (obviously) no success whatsoever.

Since I have not as yet received a definitive reply from someone here who has actually installed PCLOS onto a Medion Akoya LS (along with step-by-step instructions that I can understand), I suppose I'll have to forget about it for the time being.

After April 8, 2014 or when (if) I purchase another new cheap Windows machine (whichever comes first), I may try to install CrunchBang Linux, an OS with which I have no experience, onto the Medion computer.

For now, thanks to you and everyone else here who has tried to help.

Why do you need such a reply?

Why can you not attempt to install the OS in a dual boot set up which leaves the Windows install intact?

You would then have a definitive answer of your own.

Dear Just17,

Frankly, I'm not that good with computers. I didn't go into a great deal of detail in my first post on this thread, but my original intention was to have a dual-boot computer.

When I tried installing U----u to this computer in its own partition, not only did it not install, it also damaged my Windows installation (and no, I don't know what I did wrong).

I need Windows in order to update my Garmin GPS (and that's all I need Windows for!).

As the Windows OS no longer functioned, I then 'wiped' the computer with DBAN and tried just installing U----u again, with the results you already know. (I thought maybe I could dual-boot installing Windows after U----u but of course I found out that I can't; I can't even install U----u alone to this computer.)

So I reinstalled Windows-XP (which takes several hours and is a real 'pain') and the computer has been running fine since (as fine as any Windows computer can run) and I am reluctant to try anything like this again unless I know for certain that someone, with whom I can communicate, has done it him or herself.

That's why I need such a reply.

But it appears that I'm not going to get one. So, at least for the time being, that's it.

I am going to try to turn my PCLOS into a GPS using an old DeLorme GPS USB satellite receiver module (it is placed on the dash of your car and attaches to the computer via USB) along with GPSBabel (unless you know of a better program). The DeLorme receiver came bundled with the DeLorme GPS program which turned a Windows computer into a GPS but which I no longer use (it costs $$$$ to update every year). If this receiver works with a PCLOS computer and if the GPSBabel program works in conjunction with it then a) I will not need to update a Garmin as I won't be using a Garmin, and b) I won't need a Windows computer at all since updating a Garmin is all I use it for.

Wish me luck ...  ;)

Indeed I wish you luck!  :D

All I can do is encourage you to try dual booting ....  to do so .......

make free space on the Win HDD ...... initially about 20GB for testing, but more if it is to be a permanent install

boot the PCLOS LiveCD/DVD and install it .......  selecting 'free space' ...  definitely do not select 'use whole disk' as that would wipe the Win partition.

When completed and you reboot you will have the possibility of selecting PCLOS or Windows to boot from.
