can I clone guest to new user (on persistent USB)? [SOLVED]
« on: October 13, 2012, 08:29:01 AM »
sofar this newbie only used the guest-profile to work on his PC. I just created my own account, but would like to skip all the tweaking I did (as guest), also because I'm not sure If I can duplicate it all.

Is there a way (I guess from the live-CD since the USB can't be accessed while persistent) to clone everything (from menus to wallpaper etc.) to my new account? Does this include the programs I've downloaded to the system as guest?

thx in advance,
wiko

I am not quite certain about your set up ......  but it appears you are running a LiveUSB in persistent mode, and have created a new user account in that which you want to make as close as possible to the guest account in the LiveUSB which you have tweaked.
At least I hope I have understood correctly .....

The LiveUSB is accessible while running live ....  or at least it is when created with the PCLInuxOS- LiveUSB creator.

On that you will find a "changes" directory.
Within the changes directory you should now find a top level directory named after the OS you installed, and underneath that a "home" directory.

Within the "home" directory you should find further directories for the users of the OS.
A "guest" directory will be present if you have tweaked the guest account, and also a directory for the new user.

You should be able to copy files from one to the other .......  just remember to edit the ownership of the files you copy to reflect the new user name.

It should be possible to copy all the contents of the "guest" directory to the new user and do a blanket change of ownership on the lot.

Be sure to enable viewing of 'hidden files' as the majority will of this type I suspect.

I have not done this so I might not be accounting for everything ......

Make sure you have sufficient space on the USB partition to copy the files.

All extra programs you installed will be available to all users.

HTH.

Hi Just17,

thx for the quick reply!

about my setup, you understood correctly.

sofar, I couldn't find the "changes"-directory.

in Root PCcManFM, all I can find is /

under /media the USB does not show.

in /home however I think the USB is displayed. it contains 4 folders: mysql, lost+found, guest and my new account.

copying the files from /home/guest to my new folder gives the following errormessages:
.pcmanfm-socket--0-guest: Can't copy special file
gedit.guest.1988109406: Can't copy special file
.pcmanfm-socket--20-guest: Can't copy special file
agent.5204: Can't copy special file
control: Can't copy special file
ssh: Can't copy special file

ssh: Can't copy special file
pkcs11: Can't copy special file
gpg: Can't copy special file
agent.6061: Can't copy special file
socket: Can't copy special file

is this serious?

how can I blanket-change the username to make the account viable again?
the USB is 8GB so size is not a problem.

anyone?

thx in advance,

maybe look under  /initrd/cdrom/   for the directories on the USB drive

I don't use LXDE so had best not comment on any specific files.

Sorry, does not make sense to me.

Go to
/initrd/cdrom
and there you will find the contents of the USB drive.

The 'changes' directory holds the files etc that have been changed and are in use for persistence.

You can then copy from one account to another and change the permissions on the copied files.

hi Just17,

you may not be an LXDE-user, but sofar it now makes sense.

do you mean:
/initrd/changes/changes/LXDE2012.060/home/guest?

is this the directory to be copied?
but there are many, many folders and files.

where in which files do I find the ownership?

how to blanket-change?

when I tried to copy this (to another location) I got:
.pcmanfm-socket--0-guest: Can't copy special file
.pcmanfm-socket--20-guest: Can't copy special file
agent.5204: Can't copy special file
control: Can't copy special file
ssh: Can't copy special file
pkcs11: Can't copy special file

ssh: Can't copy special file
pkcs11: Can't copy special file
gpg: Can't copy special file
control: Can't copy special file
ssh: Can't copy special file
pkcs11: Can't copy special file
gpg: Can't copy special file
.wh.8253: Error opening file: Permission denied
.wh.8333: Error opening file: Permission denied
.wh.all-pkg-list: Error opening file: Permission denied
.bash_history: Error opening file: Permission denied
socket: Can't copy special file

again, could that be a problem?

No ......  but that might be correct ........  you had best provide some details about versions you are using of ISO and LiveUSB Creator ........   I suspect - although not sure - that you are using some older version/s .......

Can you not navigate to    /initrd/cdrom     ?

found   /initrd/cdrom/changes/LXDE2012.060/home

which contains the guest and my new directory

copying the guest directory to another location gave the same errormessages as before (so I think these directories can be reached in a number of different ways).

as is shown in the path my version is the most recent one (LXDE2012.06) with v0.9.7 of USB Creator.

so, where in which files do I find the ownership?

how to blanket-change?

thx in advance,

You can change ownership of the user directory and all it contains ....  so any files added will be changed to have the correct ownership.

I would do it by right clicking on the user directory in the file manager, selecting Properties - Permissions ......  and change ownership on the 'permissions' tab.

Be sure to select 'apply changes to all subfolders and their contents'
